Savannah--Where Time Stands Still

Sometimes it's nice to step away from the fast pace of 21st century life and to step back in time to a place where time seems to stand still, and where every monument captures a bygone era. Savannah, Georgia is one of those places for me, and since I already live in the Deep South this magical place is only a few hour's drive from me.

To go there is to enter a land of skeletal yet majestic Live Oaks populated with veritable colonies of bromeliads and ferns and draped with wispy Spanish Moss swinging gently in the sultry southern summer breeze.

Aside from the primeval flora you are treated to street after street of homes and buildings that look like they came out of a Dickens novel, and that share the same era and architectural vibe as something David Copperfield would have passed in his travels during that iconic mid-19th-century novel.

And here is an ancient hospital turned retirement home for the elderly.

And at the end of a day of sightseeing lazily around the historic byways of this feast for the senses, I return to the garden in my rental for a cup of coffee and some cheap Mickey's malt liquor from the local corner store.

Savannah is well worth the visit. There is no need to spend much money there. The best things are the scenery, and all of that is free and abundant on every corner.

Thanks for reading.
