Hello travelers,

I'm Dinusha from Sri Lanka. I have introduce my self in a previous post. You can read that here.

Today I would like to exchange the experience of my first journey in a Night mail Train with my two buddies. I'm a Civil Engineer and In my previous post, I introduced "Colombo PortCity" one of my working sites.

When I was working in Colombo PortCity site, we got a chance to visit "Uma Oya Multi purpose development project in Welimada".You can see the location from here.

It was 184 km away from Colombo city and It was located middle of the country.

So we choose night mail train to travel. We tried to book 2nd class train seats, but unfortunately all the seats were booked. So we discussed to go in a 3rd class train box.

Around 8 PM, train was departed from Colombo Railway Station. We could catch the train as we planned. We brought our dinner (some sandwiches and hoppers) to have while the journey. Train was fully packed and we hadn't enough seats to sit at the beginning. After passing 5-6 stations , We got seats to sit. Then we had our dinner and had a nap. As the middle of the country is a hilly area , the trains are going very slowly. Around 6PM it was close to Welimada. The view and the climate were very nice. This is the hilly area view with tea lands.

At 7 AM, we arrived to the destination. In the train station, we didn't forget to get selfies. This is me and one of my travel partners.

It was a rural area and no enough transport facilities. So, the site staff sent a vehicle for us to reach to the project site. This is we after arrival to the site office.

Then the site visit began. Uma Oya Multi-Purpose Project aims to generate hydropower and water for industrial activities. The Project includes the components of construction of two dams across Uma Oya and a tributary at Welimada, trans-basin diversion tunnel, and underground hydropower plant, diversion of 145MCM of water to irrigate approximately 5000 hectares of land in Hambantota and Monaragala Districts and other downstream requirements. The expected annual energy production is 290 GWh. The Total estimated cost of the project is 529 USD Million.

This is the two dams, which i mentioned above ( Dyraaba and Puhulpola dams)

By connecting the two dams , they bored a tunnel to transmit water. in Sri Lanka, this is the one of the longest water transmission tunnels. This is the tunnel boring matching they used.

We got a chance to go inside the tunnel and it was 15km long tunnel. The Uva Province lies in the Sri Lankan highlands. The geological base is metamorphous rock (mostly gneiss) and is lightly folded. The ground-water table is close to the ground surface, and this led to high levels of water ingress during tunnelling.

To prevent water inflow, the rock around the tunnel was injected with cement and sealed. These measures also allow the ground-water table to recover.

Then we visited the hydro power plant. It was located underground and with an installed power capacity of 120MW,

After visiting both dams, tunnel and powerplant, we came back to Colombo by Bus since there was no trains at that time.
As we always take selfies to collect memories. Here is the best one(Which I preferred) we took while the journey.

So this is one of my favorite memories. It was so knowledgeable and fun trip. Hope you guys love to read my post and we will meet again with a new post,

Stay Happy and Healthy.
