The Japanese Palace is one of the oldest preserved museum buildings in Germany. Originally, there was a pleasure palace by Daniel Pöppelmann and Heinrich Graf von Flemming in its place. This building, known as the Dutch Palace, had a specially designed landscape garden, modeled after Het Loo Palace in Holland - hence the name Dutch Palace.
Augustus the Strong housed his extensive collection of East Asian porcelain in the successor building. Over the years, almost 36,000 pieces of porcelain from his own Meissen manufactory were also housed in the Japanese palace.
Beim japanischen Palais handelt es sich um eines der ältesten erhaltenen Museumsgebäude in Deutschland. Ursprünglich befand sich an seinem Platz ein Lustschloss von Daniel Pöppelmann und Heinrich Graf von Flemming. Dieses als holländische Palais bezeichnete Gebäude hatte einen besonders gestalteten Landschaftsgarten, nach dem Vorbild von Schloss Het Loo in Holland - Daher der Name holländisches Palais.
August der Starke brachte seine umfangreiche Sammlung ost-asiatischen Porzellans in dem Nachfolgebau unter. Fast 36.000 Stück Porzellan aus der eigenen Meißner Manufaktur wurden im Laufe der Jahre ebenfalls im japanischen Palais untergebracht.
The building was given the name Japanese Palace only in 1732, which was due to its decoration and especially the planned porcelain exhibition. The building was heavily damaged during the Seven Years' War and the Second World War, but fortunately it was always rebuilt. The Japanese Palace is one of the most important buildings of the Dresden Baroque, in which some of its greatest architects, among others Pöppelmann, Flemming and Knöffel participated.
Den Namen japanisches Palais erhielt das Gebäude erst 1732 wofür seine Dekoration sowie vor allem die geplante Porzellan Ausstellung die Veranlassung gegeben hatten. Sowohl im siebenjährigen als auch im zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Gebäude stark beschädigt aber glücklicherweise immer wieder aufgebaut. Das Japanische Palais gehört zu den bedeutenden Bauwerken des Dresdner Barocks an dem einige seiner größten Baumeister, Unter anderen Pöppelmann, Flemming und Knöffel mitwirkten.
Unfortunately, large parts of the Palais Inneren are still under construction to this day. The associated Palais Garden, which provides a view of the Brühl Terrace on the other bank of the Elbe, was rebuilt in 1984-85 in a greatly simplified manner. Since 2017, the Japanese Palace houses the Archive of the Avant-Garde, one of the most extensive collections of artworks and objects of the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century.
Leider befinden sich große Teile des Palais Inneren bis auf den heutigen Tag im Rohbau. Der zugehörige Palais Garten, welcher den Blick auf die am anderen Elbufer gelegene Brühlsche Terrasse gewährt, wurde in den Jahren 1984-85 in stark vereinfacht Weise wieder angelegt. Seit 2017 beherbergt das japanische Palais das Archiv der Avantgarde eine der Umfangreichsten Sammlungen von Kunstwerken und Objekten der künstlerischen Avantgarde des 20. Jahrhunderts.
