Hi fellow Travelers,
Today I'm sharing a fantastic spot we spent time in the other day, the Polar Caves in Rumney New Hampshire!
Polar Caves
The name was a little odd when we were looking things up to do. The wife and I have been doing a bunch more activities with the little man because he has a lot better stamina these days and he's able to do a lot. He even outlasts us when it comes to just sheer energy lol. That meant we were going to give more things a shot that we didn't think we could do before. We were spending some time traveling around the White Mountains area recently and we grabbed a map of "things to do" in the area. While I was driving to our next area, Siena was looking things up and she mentioned this place called the Polar Caves. It certainly sounded interesting so we figured why not let's give it a try.
When we got there, we didn't really know what to expect. The map of the place looked pretty big so we were excited but as we were walking around we were confused as to what the place really was. I thought the name was a little odd. I was expecting some polar bears or some shit lol. Turns out the rock formations were cut and split by the glaciers thousands of years ago, which is why they called it the Polar Caves. Okay sure, now that makes more sense!
The first parts of it were just these small bridges and places to walk around. I was thinking okay this isn't too bad, little boring but the little man is having fun walking around so let's see how it goes. Lots of pine trees all around, I can tell you that!
Now we were looking at the different options for ways to walk around. It seemed like it was going to get a bit more interesting so we walked around all of the different options and explored it thoroughly. I liked the giant rocks all around and the fact that they built these smooth and strong paths around all of it.
Now it's going to get a bit more interesting! We were walking around a clearing when we saw this structure above us and I was thinking "thank god" it will be something cool I hope! We didn't get disappointed, that's for sure!
On the walk up to the structure we had to go underneath this giant boulder! It was the biggest one so far and the little man enjoyed it. Little did we know that this was the least dangerous thing we did that day lol
This is the view of the area we were just at, looking down from up top! It was much different that's for sure. I liked how the whole place was built on the steppes of the mountain! It seemed like some kind of fortress or something, I was loving the whole thing lol.
Here was one of our first experiences of the caves. There were actual caves, which made it a lot more interesting. The caves were definitely a lot more dangerous than we realized! The little man almost fell and got seriously hurt but that was because I wasn't insisting on going in front of him when we were inside. I had let him go ahead in one of them and that was a serious mistake. Thankfully it was the least dangerous and difficult one of them all but there were other kids that were exploring them without any parents at all. Not my cup of tea that's for sure!
One of the things that was really awesome was there was some history mixed into the trip as well! The caves were used, which makes total sense, by the Native American tribes of the area in the colonial days. Seems like it would have been a great hiding spot indeed!
The view was great but one of the really annoying things about it all was that it was a one-time trip. You went into the park and went through the different caves and walkways but you couldn't go back the way you came. We skipped one of the best areas because it was pointing to one area saying it was more difficult and to a different area saying it was less difficult. We took the easier route, not knowing that we couldn't go back and do the harder one! I was really upset about that. I love doing everything I can in a park, and I wanted to go up to the way top with the little man! Siena doesn't really like heights like that so she wasn't interested in going which is why we opted for the easier route. Had I known I would have told her to hang out down there while we explored up top. The look from up there was awesome! If we go to this place again we will certainly give this a try.
The little man had a lot of fun in the caves. Some of them were pretty precarious and ones that had some pretty severe steep stairs and climbs to them but he did remarkably well. He thankfully listened great as well! I was able to enjoy it, help him walk it with me and appreciate and take in the scenery inside and outside the caves. He was excited to get to walk out of the cave ahead of me. This one wasn't that difficult so I didn't mind letting him go ahead of me. Some of them were pretty dangerous so I didn't want him in front of me but this one was good.
There were crazy things all over the place as well, such as this! This giant boulder was being held up by some crazy cantilever physics stuff, preventing us from being squished as long as nothing changed with the positioning of the boulder. Hopefully the winters around here won't knock it loose, I know that it's definitely a possibility with how crazy snowy and icy it gets, particularly in the mountains.
The people who built the park thankfully put some time and effort into securing the boulders so they won't, at least theoretically, collapse on any of the people who are playing in the area. There were a few of these structures built around the area to help hold the boulders in place and it was both disconcerting and reassuring. Disconcerting that the boulders needed a little reinforcement but reassuring that they did that to help ensure that people could enjoy it.
This is the crazy rock face that we wanted to get to the top of! I think we will go back one day, maybe not this year since we want to explore some of the other areas but I definitely want to get to the top of that so we can see the awesome views. One of my favorite things about the White Mountains areas is the different peaks and stuff that were formed from the glaciers thousands of years ago. The granite really has some fantastic looks to it. Reminds me of some Game of Thrones type stuff sometimes, or Lord of the Rings!
If you made it this far, thanks! Lol. Have you been exploring caves like this any time in your life? How did you like it? It was certainly scary but fantastic at the same time!

a very beautiful location, I have never been in a cave, my estimation is that the cave is dirty and damp, it turns out that this cave is very clean.

Thanks man it’s a lot of fun! We’ve had a bunch of really cool trips the past few weeks and right in our back yard! I’ve loved the mountains area near us but haven’t done much to explore it besides visiting them to go snowboarding so this was a great experience!
Sounds like it. Hey are you still using that card? Is it working out for you?
