Yearning to see the rice terraces but can’t travel up north to Banaue? Surprise, surprise! There is one in Bohol too- The Cadapdapan Rice-Terraces. Comparably captivating and intriguing. With its sheer size, symmetry, and beautiful environment, these instagram-worthy rice paddles took our breath away. We didn’t know of this place until we were planning this trip.
Hello Hivers! This is Marycris. Let me take you on a journey wherein we went further than the conventional Bohol itinerary and were astonished by the Cadapdapan Rice-Terraces, a rare gem in Tagbilaran City's outskirts. This is part of our Bohol trip including our previous Anda Bohol’s iconic cenote blog. So Let’s start!
A day before the Bohol International Marathon, we decided to take a side trip in Candijay,Bohol. We hired a car plus a driver for 3500 php ($70) and negotiate for a whole day trip. Actually, we were four travelers at that time, we were both couples so we shared the cost of the car rental equally among us. We waited around 30 minutes from our pick up point at Tagbilaran port upon arriving. Another convenient and inexpensive option to get there is by scooter but that time we don’t know yet how to drive one. The cheapest way to get there is by riding a bus but since we are unfamiliar of the place so we didn’t have other choice but to rent a car.
Cadapdapan Rice-Terraces is situated in the East side of Bohol specifically in Candijay region and it offers a unique places through a section of the island that hasn't been overly exposed to tourism, which grabbed our curiosity. Well, we've always wanted to see unusual and interesting sites whenever we travel. The journey took two hours to reach the destination. Our journey was a mix of dirt roads, tarmac roads, and uneven roads. The ride took approximately three hours due to poor road infrastructure. However, we were rewarded with views of rice fields along the road. We opened the window of our car and driving around at the small roads and just smelling the rice paddies and enjoying the view was a blast!
We arrived in the Candijay Region around midday after riding through eastern Bohol's farms, rice fields, rural communities, and interesting and hilly roads. Visiting these lovely rice terraces was a delightful trip. We initially signed up for a registration in a little kubo and paid a 50 peso ($1) admission charge. We were told that we would need a guide, which would cost 100 PHP, and we were assigned to a kid guide. However, there are already several perspectives along the rice-terraces from this point on.
We started the journey with our guide telling us that we needed to ascend to a little hill that looked like a solo chocolate hill to have a good perspective of the rice terraces. During our trek, the guide gave us a quick overview of the area, saying that the Rice Terraces are located on the mountain steep hillsides of Barangay Cadapdapan and are irrigated by the Cadapdapan River.
For most Filipinos, a meal isn't considered complete without rice. I’m so glad that the gift of agriculture is still in use today. Perhaps it was simply a rice field, but the fact that every single seed was carefully planted by hand makes the experience extra special. So, kudos to our rice farmers for their hardworks and dedication to providing rice to our tables. Indeed, Happiness is a bowl of rice!
Finally, we got to the top of a single chocolate hill after a tiring 20 minutes of walking in the rice fields. The view that unfolds is awesome! The vibrant green scenery looks even more magical when the wind blows. So magical that I didn’t even realize that I was sweating like a pig. HAHA! I honestly didn’t feel the heat of the sun there although it was already midday when we arrived.
Tip: Because the Cadapdapan Rice-Terraces are close to the Can-Umantad Falls, we recommend visiting the rice-terraces first because it was quite a walk, and then wash off in the cool waters of the falls, like we did.
The Boholanons' ingenuity in producing a masterpiece of tiered rice fields is quite inspiring. The province is bursting at the seams with natural and man-made attractions, which is why Candijay, Bohol, must be on your bucket list! Cadapdapan Rice-Terraces is an absolute must-see, and it's ideal to combine with roaming around in the mountains.
This is the best rice field we've seen so far. How about you? Where have you seen the best rice fields? Leave a comment below and see you on our next blog.
