Definetely worth stopping by! 4.9/5 or 5/5 depending on the rating site with 1000s of reviews, yet it took us almost a year to finally check it out. The (Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary)[https://www.yamnuskawolfdogsanctuary.com/] is the best tourist attraction I've been to between Banff and....Toronto. Jokes aside.
They really went out with the gift shop and entrance to the sanctuary. Something tells me not 100% of the money goes to the wolfdogs, but they attract tons of donors and do great things here. We did the interactive tour which came in at $69pp and I even got a T-shirt! Being supporters of animal welfare, every penny was worth it.
The tour brings you into the pens with the wolf dogs, the unguided walking tour puts you on the other side of the fence. Wolf dogs aren't dangerous, not that you'd want to make one angry, but we got to hand feed and sit there and listen to the person tell us all about these animals.
Just in case you haven't figured it out, a Wolfdog is a dog that is part wolf part dog. The dogs they breed them with are larger ones such as Malamutes or German Sheperds. The more wolf, the wilder and the reason they end up here is they don't make the best pets. Wolfdogs like to dig, they prefer colder temperatures and would probably rip your house apart. Many of them were rescues or given to the sanctuary by animal control who took them away from idiots.
The Sanctuary is located about halfway between Calgary and the Mountains. Some wolves were arctic and some were grey wolves. The thick fur on their ears shows you that they are quite happy being outside even when its minus 40 out, they also have a den to sleep in and a few friends or a carefully selected pack in each pen.
It was a very educational experience and fairly relaxing, we went there just as the wolves were losing their winter coats and starting to get hot. They add pools in the summer, so they can take a dip.
Such beautiful creatures, you can adopt one if you don't mind something that can dig a hole about your height and can jump over any suburban fence. Something tells me they don't let just anyone 'rescue' one, and they are illegal in many jurisdictions...but not Alberta. We don't need a wolfdog anyways, I prefer cats.
