It was a dream vacation. It was my retirement vacation that I had been planning for years. We were less than a week ahead of the pandemic shutdown every place we went and just got it in before things went crazy. My adventure sports days are unfortunately behind me for the most part. :-)

OMG! You were doing the same thing we were doing! A well-planned month-long vacation in South America, right before the pandemic and forced to come home with shutdowns and barely got in the US....
I couldn't believe that the pandemic waited for it to unfold.
Yikes! And now, we are waiting again to escape, but, not before the world is a little more together. Oh, say it isn't so! We don't age, we just accumulate another year . Congratulations on the retirement. Are you done or will you follow up with a second career?
We feel very lucky. We got off the cruise ship in Melborne and flew to Hawaii and three days later Australia basically closed the country and the cruise industry came to a halt. We were in Hawaii for two weeks and three days after we left Honolulu, all the bars and restaurants shut down. Better to be lucky than good! We've already booked three big trips for 2022 with two river cruises in Europe and a trip to the Canadian Rockies. Here's hoping a new variant doesn't kill the travel industry again.
As to retirement, I had ideas about consulting, but I quickly learned there are too many other more fun things to do. Our bucket list is long and now we are behind!
That is so awesome and I have loved hearing about your fun trip!
We did the Canadian Rockies and Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island on the same trip as South America. It was a good decision to quit work early and enjoy life. I have to admit, I had to ask myself, how much money do I need to be happy?
As long as the trips can be funded and life can be lived like always, I am happy. The bucket list is long!!! Yes! That year off put us behind too!
