Of the many visits I have made to the Cathedral Square in Old Havana, only twice have I been inside that tem6ple so significant for Cubans and especially for Havana residents
The first visit corresponded to a mega-exhibition held at the University of San Geronimo attached to that religious building and where the Felix Varela Center is currently located. The opening of that event was preceded by a religious mass in honor of the apostle in our emblematic Havana Cathedral, on another anniversary of his birth.
At that time in the totally sacred environment I could not capture the true beauty of the place, but again I have returned, a little dressed from the tourist look, and although a mass was officiated there I penetrated in the enclosure this time less tense and with the sight in the cell phone to capture scenes and details of the imposing architecture of one of the most beautiful Cathedrals of America. Built in its specialized Baroque style with masonry stones, with such a solidity that the passage of time is barely noticeable in its well-preserved external and internal structure.
I entered accompanied by a friend who was a lover of architectural themes, but soon each one took his place to collect everything that would later serve us for the publications in the beehive. There, in spite of the Sunday celebration and all the religious protocol, there was a very welcoming atmosphere and a gentle sense of peace.
I was enraptured by the whole atmosphere inside. At the entrance, a classic reproduction, a sculpture of the Messiah on the cross, welcomed the parishioners and passing visitors, both national and foreign.
The centuries-old decorations on both sides of the large nave only divided by heavy columns and in the background the impressive main altar with beautiful decorations on the vaulted ceiling and semicircular arches with Gothic reminiscences running along the ceiling, with beautiful hanging lamps that accentuated with their light the sacred and mystical atmosphere of the great enclosure.
As I walked silently through the interior of the Cathedral looking for images and details, I could feel the praises, the chants and the sacred choirs, while on the right wing a procession of altar boys and priests advanced at an almost floating pace, and when they reached the huge entrance door, they all headed towards the main altar as part of the religious protocol of the mass.
In our emblematic Havana Cathedral there are wonders to unveil in its details, but that would be in another post. This was just a light Sunday visit.

De las tantas visitas que he realizado a la plaza de la Catedral en la Habana Vieja solo en dos ocasiones he estado dentro de aquel templo tan significativo para los cubanos y en especial para los habaneros.
La primera visita se correspondió con una mega exposición realizada en la universidad de San Geronimo adjunta a esa construcción religiosa y donde radica actualmente el Centro Felix Varela. A la apertura de aquel evento le antecedió una misa religiosa en honor al apóstol en nuestra emblemática Catedral de la Habana, en un aniversario mas de su natalicio.
En aquel momento en el ambiente totalmente sacro no pude captar la verdadera belleza del lugar, pero de nuevo he regresado, un poco vestido de la mirada turistica, y aunque allí se oficiaba una misa penetré en el recinto esta vez menos tenso y con la vista en el celular para captar escenas y detalles de la imponente arquitectura de una de las Catedrales mas hermosas de América.
Construida en su Barroco especializado con piedras de canteria, con una solidez tal que apenas se le nota de el paso del tiempo en su bien conservada estructura externa e interna.
Entre acompañado de una amiga amante a los temas arquitectónicos pero pronto cada uno tomo por su lugar a recopilar todo lo que después nos sirviera para publicaciones en la colmena. Allí a pesar de la celebración de Domingo y todo el protocolo religioso, se respiraba un ambiente muy acogedor y una suave sensacion de paz.
Quedé extasiado por todo el entorno interior. A la entrada una clásica reproducción, una escultura del Mesías en la cruz, recibía a los feligreses y a los visitantes de paso, tanto nacionales como extranjeros.
Las decoraciones centenarias a ambos lados de la gran nave solo dividida por pesadas columnas y al fondo el impresionante altar mayor con bellas decoraciones en el techo abovedado y arcos de medio punto con reminiscencias góticas corriendo por todo el techo, con hermosas lámparas colgantes que acentuaban con su luz el ambiente sacro y místico del amplio recinto.
Mientras recorria en silencio el interior de la Catedral buscando imágenes y detalles se sentían las alabanzas, los canticos y los coros sacros, mientras que por el ala derecha avanzaba a paso casi flotante una procesion de monaguillos y sacerdotes que al llegar a la inmensa puerta de entrada se dirigieron todos hacia el altar mayor como parte del protocolo religioso de la misa.
En nuestra emblemática Catedral de la Habana hay maravillas para develar en sus detalles, pero seria en otro post. Este fue solo una ligera visita de domingo.
