Hello kind community of Worldmappin. Encouraged by the support and welcome in my visits, I have decided to return to bring you this time to the foot of one of the most important monuments of the capital both for the beauty of the whole as for the historical value of the hero represented.
This impressive epic monument, dedicated to Maximo Gomez, called the Generalisimo, or the General of the three wars, I could see it for the first time when I was called to military service and had to make an almost circular turn to enter the mouth of that other jewel of civil engineering, which is "The Tunnel" of the Bay of Havana, which connects the two shores of the Havana roadstead.
This monument is of equestrian type since it represents the tireless warrior
mounted on a spirited horse with haughty pose and with the four legs settled on the supposed land, waiting for the order to go out to give the load to the machete.
The beast and the rider look from the land to the sea, which indicates that the person represented is a foreigner. The figure of the warrior and his mount are cast in bronze, as are the allegories to the north and south of the pedestal.
I was impressed by the high and low reliefs around the beautiful sculptural ensemble. It is also important to point out that besides being located above the entrance of the bay tunnel, the surroundings are also of great interest because at a short distance is the small castle of "La Punta", guarded by cannons of the time, and the Havana Malecon, which will never know if it begins or ends there. Just on the opposite shore of the Morro and in front of the large wooded park of the former Presidential Palace, now a history museum,
I found it much more impressive because it was integrated into the sparkling blue sky while the waves crashed against the wall of the Malecon. Some children taking advantage of the surroundings of the monument were playing carefree, while others were simply resting and recovering their energy.
Something that I also liked and can not fail to mention, is the united harmony between the sculptures, the surrounding space, and the architecture that also works at a symbolic level.
I invite you to visit this sculptural ensemble at the entrance of the Bay Tunnel.
Thank you for joining me!
