Every time I pass by the central highway (former Pan-American) that leads from the San Luis crossroads to Pinar to the capital of Pinar del Río, I remember the landscape works of some Cuban painters of the 19th century, especially Estevan Chartrand and Valentín Zan cartas, the latter, a Spaniard who settled in Cuba.
And these memories come, because in this place the geography is very different from the rest of the environment, forming a belt of palm trees that border the narrow river from which the place takes its name.
When Rio Feo takes on that nostalgic look of 19th century painting, it is at sunrise and sunset, when the landscape is about to become silhouetted and the horizon at dawn shows the soft atmosphere of the east. And the trees and mountains are silhouetted against the reddish or orange tones of the sky in the west at sunset. But the experience does not end there.
On that long and mostly fast road trip, there is only a little sunshine in Rio. But in Rio Feo there is more.
San Luis is an eminently flat territory, and one gets used to observe the nature up to long distances without big obstacles. The most recent cyclones, and the predatory action of the man in his fight for subsistence, now cooperate more with this panoramic vision of the landscape. That's why the first time that as a result of a cultural activity I went into the heart of the area, I was amazed by the beautiful natural images that would appear before my eyes.
A different geography with small elevations of gentle slopes and beautiful views of fields in different stages of cultivation impacted my retina. Plowed lands, or farmers with their oxen plowing, or, as they say here: breaking the lan
Other plots with sowings of little time, while others show the tobacco crop in full growth. As they also say in the popular country slang: about to hit the button.
I was impressed by many things in Rio Feo. The perspectives made by the tobacco furrows with their innumerable green lines seeking to escape towards the horizon. The bluish atmosphere formed by the vegetation in the meadows of the wooded lowlands.
Really in that territory there is an interesting visual rupture with the monotony of the rest of the municipality. There, even the mythical ceibas, typical of our fields, have a different aspect when they are drawn gallantly against the thicket of the mountain.
This beautiful place can be accessed from two main points. One from the central highway and the other from the head town of the municipality, by a road that winds through the fields of San Luis. Another way is through the railroad, which crosses it to continue towards the westernmost part of the province.
Rio Feo is on the border with the municipality of Pinar del Rio and there is an original and colorfully decorated fence that announces the arrival and entrance to the municipality of San Luis.

Vada vez que paso por la carretera central( antigua Panamericana )que conduce desde el entronque de San Luis hasta Pinar hasta la capital pinareña, al transitar por la zona conocida por Rio Feo, me recuerdo de las obras paisajisticas de algunos pintores cubanos del siglo XIX, sobre todo de Estevan chartrand y Valentín Zan cartas, este ultimo, español aplatanado en Cuba
Y estos recuerdos llegan , porque en este lugar la geografia se diferencia bastante de la del resto del entorno , formando un cinturon de palmeras bordeando el estrecho rio del cual toma el nombre el lugar.
Cuando mas toma Rio Feo ese nostalgico aspecto de pintura decimonona,es al amanecer y al atardecer cuando el paisaje está a punto de convertirse en siluetas y el horizonte al amanecer muestra la suave atmósfera por el este. Y los árboles y montañas se recortan contra los tonos rojizos o naranjas del cielo por el Oeste! al atardecer. Pero esa experiencia no se queda ahí.
En ese largo, casi siempre veloz recorrido por carretera. en Rio solo se sorecia un poco. Pero en Rio Feo hay mas.
San Luis es un territorio eminentemente llano, y uno se acostumbra a observar la naturaleza hasta largas distancias sin que grandes obstaculos se interpongan, Los ciclones mas recientes , y la acción depredadora del hombre en su lucha por subsistir, ahora cooperan mas con esa vision panorámica del paisaje. Por eso la primera vez que producto de una actividad cultural me adentre hacia el l corazon de la zona, quede asombrado por las bellas imagenes naturales que se habrían ante mis ojos.
Una geografia diferente con pequeñas elevaciones de suaves pendientes y hermosas vistas de campos en diferentes etapas delaboreo impactabsn mi retina . Tierras roturadas, o campesinos con sus bueyes arando,o, como dicen por aca: rompiendo las tierras.
Otras parcelas con las siembras de poco tiempo, mientras otras muestran el cultivo del tabaco en pleno crecimiento . Como tambien dicen en el argot popular campestre: a punto de dar el boton.
Me impresionaron muchas cosas de Rio Feo. Las perspectivas que hacen los surcos de tabaco con sus innumerables líneas verdes buscando fugarse hacía el horizonte. Las azulada atmosfera que forma la vegetación en la pradera de los bajíos boscosos.
Realmente en ese territorio se produce una interesante ruptura visual con la monotonía del resto del municipio . Alli, hasta las míticas ceibas ,típicas de nuestros campos, tienen un aspecto distinto cuando se dibujan gallardas contra la espesura del monte .
A este hermoso paraje se puede acceder por dos puntos principales. Uno desde la carretera central y el otro desde en poblado cabecera del municipio, por un camino que cerpentea a través de los campos sanluiseños. Otra via , es a través del ferrocarril, que lo atraviesa pará seguir rumbo a la parte mas occidental de la provincia.
Rio Feo es fronterizo con el municipio de Pinar del Rio y allí esta ubicada una original Valla vistosamente decorada que anuncia la llegada y entrada al municipio de San Luis.
Si visita Cuba, y de Cuba Pinar dtl Rio, no se olvide de visitar este hermoso y productivo entorno natural.

Amigo tengo la misma percepción que usted. Cuando paso por la carretera en ese tramo todo me parece una gran obra de arte. Los múltiples tonos de verde en contraste con en marrón de la tierra rotulada y el cielo azulado o manchado por motas blancas, las casitas que se levantan casi en la pendiente del cauce del Río. Una verdadera obra de la naturaleza y el hombre. Gracias por compartir.

Pinar del Rio tiene unos paisajes muy bellos, ese lugar que nos muestras es asombroso, nada que ver con el nombre.
