RE: Devil and hell in Kyushu, Japan

in Worldmappinlast month

Wonderful photos! You know, I've never been to Kyushu. I've been all over Honshu and Shikoku, but not Kyushu yet.

You know why Sugawara Michizane was deified? Because he was exiled and he died in exile, but then terrible disasters started happening to the Imperial family, including the emperor's son died, there was a drought, and the Imperial Palace being hit by lightning twice. People claimed it was the restless spirit of Michizane. So they defied him as Tenjin in an attempt to appease his spirit. Nowadays his shrines (Tenmangu shrines) have spread all over Japan and are one of the most popular shrines.

I read a bit about Sugawara Michizane when I was researching for Diazifu. Sounded like he had an interesting life, both alive and dead, and have left an important legacy!

I want to go to Shikoku! It seems a little under rated compared to the rest of Japan, but the views I've seen are beautiful. Have you ever posted about it?
