The Struffelt – My Little Escape into the Wild Heart of the Eifel
What‘s better as walking a cool part of the unknown part of the Eifel. Surroundet by water and a lot of damn relaxed and happy sheep’s.

A place to unwind
Some places calm you down the moment you arrive. The Struffelt ?
It doesn't calm you. It enchants you, grabs you gently by the collar and whispers,
"Forget your deadlines, mate, you’re in my world now."

This little patch of „high moorland“ or „Hochmoor“ in German, perched just above the sleepy village of Rott in the Eifel, looks like someone mashed together the best bits of #Scotland, #Scandinavia, and a #Tolkien novel – then left it alone for a few millennia to marinate.
That way - points @detlev

Wooden boardwalks snake lazily across soggy ground, birch trees stand tall like natural sculptures, and moss creeps over every surface like nature’s own shag carpet. And here’s the kicker – it's so quiet, you can actually hear the silence. The occasional gust of wind through the grass sounds like nature exhaling. My phone, by the way, gave up the moment I arrived. Zero bars. Glorious.

The Special “Something”
What’s the secret ingredient that makes The Struffelt unforgettable?
For me, it’s the way the whole place feels like a portal to another world. One minute you're parked on a modest Eifel road, thinking, "Nice, a little walk." The next, you're crossing over mossy ground, dodging puddles, and half-expecting a hobbit to offer you second breakfast.

And then there's the Struffelt Tower – a wooden viewing platform in the middle of nowhere that gives you 360-degree views of endless greenery, stretching all the way to the horizon. On a clear day, it feels like standing on top of the world. On a foggy day? Well, you’ll feel like the opening scene of every moody crime drama ever made. Both fantastic.
Oh, and keep your eyes peeled – more often than not, there’s a flock of sheep roaming freely across the landscape. These woolly locals don’t care about your city stress. Honestly, I caught myself envying their carefree existence. Might apply in my next life.
The village close by
Let’s talk surroundings. Rott is one of those blink-and-you-miss-it villages, but don’t be fooled – what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Expect cobbled streets, friendly locals, and a distinct lack of anything flashy. It’s all beautifully low-key.

But if you're feeling adventurous (and have some energy left after your moorland wanderings), the wider region is packed with treasures. The High Fens (Hohes Venn) is just around the corner – a vast expanse of moorland, heath, and forest that’s basically Belgium’s answer to the wilderness. You can hike for hours without seeing another soul (or another phone signal).
Need a reward after all that nature? Pop over to Monschau, a postcard-perfect town that seems specifically designed to lure you in with timber-framed houses, cobbled alleys, and cakes so good they should be illegal. Seriously – I had a slice of their famous “Monschauer Dütchen” and almost considered moving there permanently.
Have a read to my detailed post about Monschau at #Hive
What Exactly Is a “Hochmoor”?
A Hochmoor, or raised bog, is basically nature’s version of a patient, slow-burning artist. Picture this: over thousands of years, rainwater collects in a basin that has absolutely zero ambition to drain anywhere. The Struffelt is exactly a place like this.
It just... sits there. Cozy, undisturbed. Eventually, the bog looks around and thinks,
“Well, if we’re going to be wet forever, might as well make something of it.”
And that’s where sphagnum moss steps in – the superfood of the plant world, soaking up water like a sponge and growing so slowly it makes bonsai trees look like speed demons.
Here’s the kicker: Hochmoors don’t feed off fancy rivers or rich soil. Nope, they live minimalist – rainwater only, thank you very much. No minerals, no nutrients, just pure sky juice. The result? A soft, spongy landscape that looks like it belongs in a fantasy movie. Moss carpets everywhere, gnarly birch trees popping up, and little pools of dark water that seem like they might hide a few elves (or at least some very chilled-out frogs).
And as if that wasn’t enough, these bogs are climate heroes. Seriously, they store more CO₂ than some forests, and they do it quietly, without fuss. No speeches, no marches – just lying low and doing their thing.

In short: A Hochmoor is part sponge, part time capsule, part natural masterpiece. And once you’ve walked across one of those bouncy wooden boardwalks, feeling that soft "wobble" underfoot, you’ll know you’ve stepped into a place where time runs differently – slower, quieter, and infinitely more fascinating.
The different Place to visit
Here’s the thing about The Struffelt: it’s not flashy, it’s not hyped, and thank goodness, there isn’t a souvenir shop in sight. What it is, though, is the kind of place that quietly resets your soul. No background noise, no Instagrammers posing by waterfalls, just a boardwalk, some sheep, and an endless stretch of moody moorland doing its thing.
Ok, we had some fun at the end of the wodden walk, there was a bonus.
A Champagne form all the walking
Yeah - our group of four carried a nice and cold bottle all the way. Sure as well with
„correct“ glasses to enjoy it.

As I trudged back to my car, muddy boots and all, it hit me – sometimes, the best travel experiences aren’t the bucket-list moments. They’re the quiet, unexpected ones, where the wind is your soundtrack, your phone’s out of service, and you realize you’ve been smiling at nothing for half an hour.
Final Thought:
If you ever need to unplug, no plane ticket required, The Struffelt is waiting. No crowds, no chaos – just pure, unfiltered nature and a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a muddy path and a few birch trees to feel properly alive.
Have a great day everybody
and let us travel the world again

How wonderful to celebrate a visit to such a magical place in this way!
Have a great trip my friend, have a great day there❤️❤️
I really like the place particularly the long wavy wooden pathway. We can easily walked to the place without getting muddy or dusty and aside of that, it is built very unique.
On the other hand, surely there are lots of wild animals hiding in the place like birds. ☺
And a lot of sheep’s
Wow, I really did not seen any sheeps here. 😁
hmm, ok - but they left a lot sheep footprints
enchants now thats a word am looking for. and i can see this place says it all. seeing the view it has this natural dry intense smoky feeling but in a good way
