West Sumatra traditional house

in Worldmappin3 days ago (edited)
Hello worldmappin community friends! Surely, you already know that Indonesia has a variety of customs and cultures. Maybe many of you also know that there is one place that displays this diversity, yeah... the name of the place is Taman Mini Indonesia Indah. In this place, we can learn a lot about Indonesian customs and culture. Recently, my husband and I went there for the umpteenth time. Even though it has been repeatedly, I am still amazed by the beauty of the customs and culture that we have. Of the many traditional houses there, the one that caught my attention the most was the West Sumatran traditional house complex.

The traditional house complex of West Sumatra is very majestic, even from afar. This traditional house is called Rumah Gadang which comes from the local language of the Minangkabau tribe. Derived from the word "Gandang" which means "Big", therefore the gadang house is large. That said, they deliberately built a large house so that it could accommodate a large family. Another interesting thing besides its size, this traditional house has a unique roof shape. The roof is curved and at the end of the roof is pointed. They call this roof "gonjong" and it resembles buffalo horns. The basic material of the roof uses Ijuk which comes from palm fronds. I think it's really unique and interesting.

Apart from the architecture of the traditional houses, I also admire the design of this complex. There is a lake at the front and some greenery that adds to the beauty of this place. Really, I never get tired of coming here. Besides that, there are several vendors selling regional food such as nasi padang and satay padang. In addition to learning about customs and culture, tourists can taste regional food as well.

I highly recommend friends, especially those from abroad who want to know about Indonesia. It's true that you can't fully learn about Indonesian customs and culture with just one visit to TMII. But in my opinion, I can at least understand a little about the customs and culture that exist in our country. This place is very beautiful and spacious, and most importantly it can be a place to learn.

You are very welcome @devyswan1! it was well deserved. ☀️

That looks cool and it is on Java?

Reminds me a bit to that historical village at Lake Toba in Sumatra.

We've been there ages ago and slept in that kind of houses for some nights.

Yes, it is located in Java. There you will find all the traditional houses from all provinces in Indonesia.

That's cool, even I haven't had the chance to visit Lake Toba.
