Courtney park Green Spaces Newton Abbot

in Worldmappin6 months ago

Hello Hivers while doing a Hive Drone Community post the other day on the bandstand in Courtney Park I realized the park has a lot more going for it and deserved a post all of its own so off out with the drone and camera again.

Situated across the road from the Newton Abbot rail station the park is probably the first view of Newton many people get.

If your caught short opposite the station and at the entrance to the park is one of the few public conveniences in Newton. Odd little story goes along with it the a number years ago the police made a arrest there when they caught a guy cottaging a poor police constable had to hide in there for days and had to wave a hanky out of the window when he heard something going on so they could come in and make the arrest.

Following the path around stop at the the corner of the park where you still find Newtons public bomb shelter from the war volunteers give free tours on Sunday.

Next to the bomb shelter is the home of Newton Abbots bowling green the and the club house of the local team.

A couple of years ago the band stand had a big refurbish this seems to happen about every 25 years or so and was last done in 1995.

The cost was over £50,000 this time if I remember correctly. Completely scaffolded and covered for months it was grit blasted then the roof and fencing repaired. It was looking a bit sad.

Made a good job though built some time in the late 1880 it’s a real bit of Victorian memrobilia suprised it wasn’t ripped down for the scrap during WW2 a lot of them were.

In keeping with the Victorian theme in the middle of the park at a path cross road , there yes an old Victorian iron lamp stand it probably in need of a bit of TLC too as the base is cracked with a lot of peeling paint and it’s getting rather rusty in places.

Close to the band stand there is a sensory garden with areas of plants to touch, smell of listen to it’s been there for a while and well established so you can still enjoy the park if your a bit impaired. But I think the sign needs replacing.

Above the band stand is a very green pond there are supposed to be fish but its too green to see anything it sometimes clears a bit in the winter but never enough I remember as a kid sailing a model boat on it you can get most of th edges and a bit of string and fishing weight was enough to pull it in if it got stuck, fun times.

Kids these days need a bit more to entertain them and there is a fenced off play area on the walk back down to the train station.

IMG_0931.jpeg

The park is a good place to catch Pokémon and one of the benches has a small plaque for a boy who used to do just that but died of cancer far to young.

IMG_3314.jpeg
As you can see it’s an easy walk all the paths are tarmac and the slope up to the top is quite gentle still better not let go of granny’s wheelchair on the way down
IMG_0933.jpeg

There is plenty of space to let your dog run around this is Oscar far to viscous to be let of the lead don’t you think.

Or you could just meet up with fellow doggers 😉.

So you see Hivers there is a lot more to the park than first meets eye. Newton Abbot has quite a few green spaces but I’ll leave that for another day.
