EXPERIENCES OF THE FLOODS
Today I will talk a little about the problem of the arrival of torrential rains in Venezuela, specifically in two places in the State of Bolivar, in Venezuela where I have been and witnessed directly the consequences of the rains.
For the months of July and August, annually, in the winter season, the rains are heavy, the water currents that are formed, gain strength and vigor and invade urban areas in its path to get out of its channel. These floods carry with them dirt and contamination as they carry waste and debris of any kind in their path.
I have been able to experience this situation in two different places, the first, in the Paseo Orinoco of Ciudad Bolivar, Bolivar State in 2018, when the flooding of the Orinoco River, thanks to the permanent rains, exceeded the expected limit and invaded art of the Paseo Orinoco, main commercial area of the city and other nearby rural areas. Truly it is something not frequent, it is bad for those who live or have commercial premises nearby because the merchandise will be damaged, as well as their homes, causing significant material losses; but for visitors and curious like us it is something amazing.
Historically, in 1943, a large part of the lower areas of the city were flooded, at that time the river reached a maximum level of 17.95 meters above sea level.
In 1951, the river also flooded the lower areas of the city, reaching a maximum elevation of 17.65 meters above sea level.
Year 1976, northern part of Ciudad Bolivar (in its entirety, at both ends), the river reached extraordinary levels of 18.04 meters above sea level.
Finally, in 2018, the Orinoco River reached an all-time high of 18.34 masl, 34 centimeters above the red alert level in Ciudad Bolivar and I was there to witness it firsthand. It is something amazing. The force of Nature is impressive.
In that same season, in 2018 we returned to our residential city, the rains continued daily. Near my house passes a small creek called "Quebrada El Caballo", a place where the drainage systems, due to bad government policies, do not have their periodic maintenance and due to the rains, the amount of water began to return and take the streets of the sector.
My house was saved from the flood, but the neighbors suffered the disasters caused by the water, getting into the plots, and inside their homes. My mother's house, which lives near my house, also suffered from the water disasters. We had to wait for the drainage to be cleaned so that the current could flow a little and we could begin to remove the water that was dammed up inside the homes. It took about 6 hours of bucketing water out. Then came the cleaning with chlorine and disinfectants because of the contamination that this generates.
Furniture, mattresses, electronic equipment were lost, and the saddest thing is that there is no government to respond to these eventualities, which although they are the result of natural causes such as rains, should not happen if the drains and canals were properly maintained.

I'm sorry to read about your experience of the flooding from four years ago. However please note the haveyoubeenhere community is a travel community, we'd appreciate if you do not post no travel content here in future. Thanks
I'm sorry the post caused you inconvenience. It was during a trip that I realized that I was able to observe something that had not happened many years ago in that city. I avoided posting photos of unpleasant scenes. I did not know that an experience of a trip could not be told in this community and even less that it was a nuisance for you. Sorry. Good afternoon.
