The Kite Festival is an annual event that is a part of the festivities at the Blossom Festival on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
There will be no Cherry Blossom Parade or Kite Festival in 2021, but the National Cherry Blossom Festival organizers are in the process of creating a safe and pandemic-appropriate schedule of events.
For the second year in a row, there will be no Kite Festival (originally called the Smithsonian Kite Festival, renamed Blossom Kite Festival) Instead of flying your kite high over the Capitol, they will have virtual workshops and demonstrations leading up to the main event on March 27th and 28th. Everyone is encouraged to register and take the kite-flying to their own backyard, where it will be shared on their online community! Blossom Kite Fly is sponsored by Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. You can click on the link to be a part of the fun This year, it will be a world-wide event. You can join in the fun too. Click on the link and check out the festival.

Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height
Let's go fly a kite
And send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite
Let's go fly a kite!
From Mary Poppins
I try to remember what it looks like with hundreds of kites in every color, shape, and size soaring skyward around the Washington Monument, and only then can you appreciate the Blossom Kite Festival. Kite fliers of all ages from across the United States and the world gather to fly handmade kites and compete for prizes during this colorful event.,/center>
The Kite Festival features a handmade kite competition for children and adults, with awards given in categories such as most artistic, most humorous, and most patriotic. Other highlights include a Hot Tricks kite flying competition and the popular Rokkaku Kite battle, in which Japanese-style kites battle each other for sole command of the sky.
The original Smithsonian Kite Festival was sponsored by the Smithsonian Associates and the National Air and Space Museum. It was founded in 1967 by aviation pioneer Paul E. Garber (1899-1992).
- Blossom Kite Festival
You could bring your own kites or if you didn't, there was an activity station where kids got to make their own. On the grounds, in one of the tents was the kitemeister, who fixed kites that fell to the earth too quickly or got tangled. Then, of course, it is off to find your spot around the Washington Monument or on the Mall somewhere.
It matters not where you toss your kite into the air! Every spot is perfect. There is the sound of music in my ears... You could hear laughter behind every corner. Who doesn't love to fly a kite?
Everyone would find their own corner to fly. I know it is a harsh blow to many, plans are made, but, there will always be next year. In the meantime, we can get online, register, and try out that backyard. Perhaps a family barbecue is in order. I intend to make this a positive experience and another chance to hone my skills. Pictured: Smithsonian Castle and the United States Capitol.
If it has been a long time since you have flown a kite, click on the top link, where you will see demonstrations - and don't forget to sign up and participate! You too can be in Washington, DC, if only virtually! This enterprising woman flies double-fisted, while her husband took a walk around. She officially gets my utmost respect.
All of the events are pet-friendly. They even have water stations and bags in case you forget yours at home.
This is just a small part of the entire festival. I hope that next year the COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted and we can enjoy it once again. In the meantime, I am signed up and ready to launch my kite! Come on! Let's go fly a kite! Everybody! Pictured below: Washington National Monument.
All I have are my words, armed in my mind, written in pen, stand by stand. Oh, yes. Still by hand. It has a different feel. Altered not by keys, backspace, and delete, I write, erase, tear it to pieces and start all over again. And again.
It’s my way. I walk out to the deep end of the page and dive right in.

The Naming of Cats
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.

I never knew there was a kite festival! How cool! 😃
And the Washington Monument is two colors, rather than one...? 😳
The color line shows where construction stopped in 1856, when private donations for it ceased to exist. The groups in charge of it argued over the much the monument should represent George Washington and our nation. Because construction had stopped for two decades and took place in two phases, the quarry stone couldn't be matched, and so now, the monument is two different shades; lighter at the bottom and darker at the top. You don't notice unless you are taking a picture of it. :)
ah, that makes sense! I guess I'd never seen a photo of it that close before! Thanks for the explanation! 🙂
Probably true. I was on top of it, stepping back just enough to get it in the lens. :))
Thanks again for stopping by!
I love that happy song:
Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height
Let's go fly a kite
And send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite
Let's go fly a kite!
Washington DC is beautiful with the kites flying!
I love that song! It brings back such sweet memories of my sisters and brothers singing along to it in the car. There were nine of us, so I have to feel bad for my mom!!! She probably heard that song and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a hundred times. There were others along the way, but, those were easy to remember for all the little ones. :)
Come on!! Let's go fly a kite!
l see joy all over the people gathered there. Thanks for sharing beauty with us today like always. I wish you a great weekend @dswigle.

Thank you so much, Sam! It is the joy of the kite festival! Thank you, always for stopping by and leaving your kind and generous words!
I appreciate you dropping your link!
Have an amazing weekend!
Brings back good childhood memories. I had a paper pirate flat that was black and white and I thought was pretty cool.
Ben and I will have to get his out. He has a beast of one that uses 2 hands and will darn near drag you around!
The lady that was two-fisted up there? Her other one was one of the giant dragons! She looks all properly dressed and coiffed, but, she could tangle with the best of them. :))
Sure, you can register and check out the Cherry Blossom Festival site for being part of! :) What kind does Ben have?
Its a Prism Tantrum. It really tugs ya
That is really cool! I love it! That is the kind of kites that they have at these festivals! You would love it!
Great job! They are hard to keep up, unless there is a huge blow of air!
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Thank you @pinapple!!!
Definitely some tangled strings on that day. Too bad people will miss the chance to get out in the sun and soak up some vitamin D, community and wonder.
Next year one hopes.
Beautiful shots, Denise:)
There wasn't as much as you would think. For having people shoulder to shoulder, there were only a few and they were always overly polite about it, so it always makes for a nice day!
This year, the vitamin D will be from the backyard, or perhaps the lonely strip of beach at the shore. If it is nice, that is where I will be! It was 26C yesterday, but, it will be cooler by Monday, but, no snow!
Next year, Beauty. Next year. Until then, we will make the best of it! xoxo
Have a fabulous day!
Nothing like a trip to the beach to shore up the immune system. The media only covered the initial increase in cases wrt to Florida, but over all their more free way of dealing with things ... during the summer months ... made for much better over all results than compared to California who has a similar climate but a younger over all population.
The summer is the time to work the immune system and shore up reserves for the winter. We can trust nature and our bodies way more than we have been led to be believe.
Just make sure you are resting and eating well, keeping your amazing mind beautiful.
My beach house is on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I sold the Florida fun house two months before COVID-19 hit.
It has milder winters there and the beach is beautiful. If I feel like going to Florida for a few days weeks, someday I can go for a month! I will rent. They have nice places and it isn't worth owning one if you are not full-time. I already have the two houses. :)
I rest and eat well, except for being overworked. :))
So nice ... probably good to have sold before:)
That´s a very nice and creative tradition, never heard of that. You guys in Washington know how to have fun, right? :)
:)) There are a lot of Kite Festivals Worldwide actually, but, this is tied to the Cherry Blossom Festival, originally sponsored by the Smithsonian Foundation and It is really pretty fun to watch the battles. :)
The outdoor fun here is pretty good. Thanks for stopping by!

I wish I could be here!!
Very nice environment, especially, I really like the picture of the first kite!
Thank you! This year, you can actually be there virtually! If you click the Register link at the top, it has all sorts of fun things to do, except this year, it will all be virtual due to COVID-19.
Thank you also - I like the first shot too! It is an amazing sight with all those kites flying! Thank you for dropping by and leaving your kind words! I hope you have a great day!
I do so love kites, although, unless I'm forgetting something, I haven't flown one since I was a child. What ??
I've always loved your kite photos !
You haven't flown one since you were 7? Oh, my! Then you must click that link at top and register to fly! They will take you through all the steps you need to know! We are all doing it virtually from our backyards this year, which enables it to be a world-wide event this year! Woo-hoo?
I love your painting of the kites!! Is this a new one? Bright pops of pretty dotting your sky. It is beautiful, El. I really like it and it is so darned happy, it makes me grin.
Are you ready? Let go fly a kite!!! oops!!!
Well... I followed the link and thought I would bookmark it so when people add their photos I will be able to see.
I will fly one if someone else will do the running to get it up into the air ! ha ha.....
I don't think that kite piece still exists. I wasn't happy with it and it is probably under something else I liked better..... or not.... there is a pile in here and sometimes I forget what I have kept or is waiting for a do-over. :)
I believe I am destined to try again though.
Oh, I actually liked that one! It has a happy air about it. Your pieces are just a happy little reminder that life is good.
I'm glad you are bookmarking it. I want to see what its going to be like!
Happy Friday!
