Exploring Sterling Falls Gorge, Vermont

The temperatures have finally climbed above freezing. A night of rain has washed away much of the snow. While this limits a lot of the winter time activities like skiing and snowshoeing, it does open up some hiking trails that are usually closed during the winter. The other day I explored the trail to Bingham Falls, and it was a bit treacherous. The icy conditions on the steep trail could have spelled doom for the unstable hiker. But with the big thaw, I felt good taking my two kiddos to check out the trail to Sterling Falls.

The parking lot was completely muddy. But we were prepared with big rubber boots and waterproof outer layers. We hit the trail, and even though the forest floor was still covered in quite a bit of snow, thanks to the tree cover, the snow itself was pretty soft and not too icy. Some parts of the path we chose to head off into the deeper snow for better traction. During a couple of these offshoots, the kids found fun snow-slides to get down little hills. We passed a couple of informative signs, but I didn't want the kids getting too close to the cliff edge to look at what the signs were talking about. There was some cool geology on display, from glacial erratics, to pothole erosion.

Slowly but surely, we made it down the trail, and next to the water's edge. We had a view of several cascades. On a warm, summer day, I bet this would be a great place to play in the river, and maybe even head upstream a bit to the bigger water falls. But for today, we had wintry fun. We kicked ice off the cliffs and rocks. We built snowmen and then tried to throw river rocks and hit them. Of course the kids played with sticks... when do they ever pass up that opportunity. It was a different kind of winter wonderland.

It always feel cool to be so far removed from the hustle and bustle of the busy life. A place like this reminds you to slow down, get outside, and enjoy nature. Sometimes all you need for fun are some rocks and sticks.

The natural beauty of winter is the frozen snow. Wow, the river looks a little bit murky but it looks very cold and probably can't be touched by hand because it will be very cold.

Amazing pictures and lovely falls!!
