Antigua - Guatemala (the Old Capital)

Antigua Guatemala (Old Guatemala)

Guatemala is an incredibly special place to visit, and I will forever be grateful for my time spent exploring this incredible country.

In late 2018 my sister and I decided to throw a dart at a map - the only rules were it needed to be in the Americas, and it needed to be a safe place to travel. We landed on Guatemala. 3 months later we boarded a plane in Feb 2019 and made our way for a 10 day trip through Guatemala. The only plans we had were to spend 3 days at the beginning of our trip in Antigua.

Antigua is the old Guatemala. One of the original Spanish settlements in the area and what was the Capital for many many years. Guatemala City as known today was created for partially political and partially location based reasons. But since - Antigua has been recognized by UNESCO as a location of great heritage. And it truly is!

Words cannot truly express the incredible turn of the century architecture found here. The stunning churches and monastery buildings, and the even more beautiful landscape surrounding Antigua - If you've been here, you know.

Known for its coffee, chocolate, and avocado, almost every tree and bush you see covering the far hills are one of these plant varieties. Its really the only place in the world where I've learned to enjoy Acocado, before I despised them! But they are so perfectly sweet and rich here.

I hope you've like this little recap. I sure had fun reliving my trip from so long ago, looking over fond memories and dreaming of travel once again!

Very cool to see this. Hope to sail here in a few years.

Sailing here would be amazing too. If you need a list of things to do I'd love to recommend some. Antigua is just the tip of the iceberg here

Yes. Out boat is in Aruba. So heading to the western Caribbean is probably next on the list.

Beautiful shots, it looks like an amazing place and I love that volcano! I've always wanted to visit.

Thanks Blake! Ya, Fuego, Agua, and Acatenango are the three major Volcanos in the area here. On our 4th day here we actually summit all 5000m of Acatenango, which looks down on Fuego. You'd love it! Fugeo erupts every 10-15min all day every day as well which is amazing to see and hear

Such incredible photography and I love the architecture so much! That little street with all the colorful buildings is one of my favorites.

That mountain just dominates the landscape doesn't it? These shots make me want to go there. Coffee, chocolate and avocado? Sign me up!

Oh it's MASSIVE. It towers over 4000m above the city there. Called Volcan de Agua, and it makes a great directional reference point haha

Had no idea you've been there. Love how you did the trip too. I think I need to borrow that idea...

This was before I'd ever met you. I'd literally just bought my first camera about 2 months before this trip and spent a lot of the trip learning it haha
But yes! The spontaneous is amazing. After arriving we spent time just talking to locals and others travelling to pick our next destination. Travelled by whatever means was cheapest (sometimes the scariest option) and ate street food as much as we could. It was incredible. I ate so much pineapple and avocado. About $1400CAD in total at the end of the trip.

Great photographs, you get a real feel for the places just by looking at them 😊

Perfect! Hats exactly what I'd hoped you'd get from the images I selected. There's more from the trio I'll hopefully share here later too - this is only Antigua!

Great, looking forward to seeing them 😊

Wow, I would like to climb that volcano!

The best thing is that you can! Although the elevation gain is a bit sickening.. plus the altitude sickness I got doing it

Great! I hope to visit that country at some point and do it!

Awesome insight. i am travelling through Central America in 28 days time, this is on my route. Yeeeee haaaw!!
