Meersburg Bodensee
We were on the road with the camper over Easter and on the way back, we made a short stop in Meersburg on Lake Constance.
Until then, I only knew the name Meersburg through a chef who had a restaurant there during my apprenticeship almost 30 years ago. Back then, almost every cooking insider talked about this restaurant and how innovative this chef was. This restaurant no longer exists, but the name Meersburg is still familiar to me, so we made a short stop in this small town.
Meersburg has just 6000 inhabitants and is located on the northern shore of Lake Constance.
You can take a steamer from here to Constance or the island of Mainau. You can probably even go around the whole of Lake Constance, but I haven't really looked into that.
We were only there for a short stay of about 2 hours.
If you walk from the car park above the town, this is your first impression of the old town.
Actually quite pretty. But it's already going down very steeply here.
What immediately catches the eye are the relatively well-preserved old half-timbered houses and the paintings on the house facades.
Relatively quickly, the castle comes into view.
The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1071. The oldest parts of the building probably date from this time.
At the bottom, you come to the seafront. What are those trees?
On the other side is Switzerland. There are probably no illegal immigrants here. At most shopping tourists who stock up on cheaper food and other goods in Germany.
The old town has a small pedestrian zone in the lower town with the classic small restaurants and ice cream parlours.
From here, a staircase leads to the castle and the upper part of the old town.
In the middle of the path we found this little gem. An old water wheel.
From above, the wheel looked like this. I don't know if anyone really still lives in it. But I can imagine that it's not much fun to live there during the high season.
And then we found a funny knight man. Actually, he wasn't funny at all. He prevented me from entering the castle with his sword. I was supposed to pay customs, but I refused.
But we were still in the garden before the new castle.
When we reached the upper market square, we went to a church. But I don't think you have to do that.
This was our last impression of the city. A backyard with the typical half-timbered houses.
Meersburg is certainly worth a trip, but probably only for a day. There's not really much to do there.
Looks like you had a wonderful short stop in Meersburg! It's always nice to visit a place that you've heard about before and see it for yourself.
The photo you shared of the old town is charming and makes me want to visit myself one day. Thanks for sharing your experience!
You are wellcome. Yes it was lovely, but not big enough for more than one day. !LOL

I loved Meersburg! And it's possible to drive there around the lake as this is how we did it 🙂 You can get there from Constance by car as well, it just takes a bit more time.
It's a pity you only have a couple of hours as the old castle is worth visiting. It has beautiful interior as well as views from the terrace over the lake and the Alps.
Thank you for sharing!
Maybe I can manage it next time. Castles are everytime worth to visit for me.
