Sometimes, we wonder what tourist or significant sites might exist in the city where we live, and we become so accustomed to it that we start overlooking important details. My city has a rich history, and recently, I read someone say that there is nothing to see or explore in Portoviejo—but without a doubt, they are mistaken.
On this occasion, I want to introduce you to a museum that also functions as a restaurant and café-bar. More than just a place to enjoy excellent Manabita cuisine (Manabita refers to the name of the province, Manabí), it highlights the city's history, culture, and ancestors—those who played a crucial role in rebuilding the city. You can spend hours admiring each painting, artwork, relic, and detail that fills this unique space.

A veces nos preguntamos qué sitios turísticos o de relevancia pueden haber en la ciudad donde vivimos y nos llegamos a acostumbrar a estar en ella, que comenzamos a obviar los detalles importantes. En mi ciudad hay muchísima historia y hace poco leía a alguien decir que en Portoviejo, no hay nada que ver o conocer, pero sin duda, se equivocan.
En esta oportunidad quiero mostrarles un Museo que funciona como Restaurante y Café Bar, pero que más de ser un sitio para degustar de una buena gastronomía Manabita (Manabita hace referencia al nombre de la provincia Manabí), hace referencia a su historia, a su cultura y antepasados, esas personas que fueron parte fundamental en la reconstrucción de la Ciudad y puedes pasar horas viendo cada cuadro, pintura, reliquia y detalle que hay en ese lugar.
Why is it called "La Olla"?
As you approach from the bypass of Manabí’s capital, Portoviejo, you will see the reason behind its name. This place is a true work of art—it is built in the shape of a giant clay pot. It has two floors, multiple entrances, and two event halls. On its facade, there is an illustration that represents the local culture. It depicts the "Montuno" people, referring to those from rural areas. As a result, you can see men wearing straw hats, a donkey, small cane houses in the background, and children playing. Upon entering, if you look up slightly, the first thing you will notice is the facade of a traditional house—one of those cane-and-wood houses that are still preserved in the historic center of the city.

¿Por qué se llama la Olla?
Desde que vas llegando por el paso lateral, de la Capital de Manabí, Portoviejo, podrás observar la razón de su nombre, y que este lugar es todo un arte, pues está construido en forma de olla de barro gigante, tiene dos plantas, múltiples entradas y dos salones de eventos. En su fachada hay un dibujo que es característico de esta zona, se les dice "Montuno" haciendo referencia a la gente dd campo y por ende salen los hombres con los sombreros de paja, el burro, las pequeñas casa de caña en el fondo y los niños jugando. Al ingresar, si miras un poco hacia arriba, lo primero que verás es la fachada de una casa de época, de esas casas de caña y madera que aún se conservan en la parte del casco central de la Ciudad.

After that, you can explore the place—it's so big that I couldn’t capture everything, but I covered as much as possible to not only photograph some areas but also enjoy them.
One of the things I liked the most was the means of transportation—those antique cars that take us on a journey to the past while also allowing us to appreciate how much we have progressed over time.

Luego de eso, puedes recorrer el lugar, es grande, tanto que me faltaron muchas tomas para mostrar, pero lo recorrí en la mayor parte que pude para además de fotografiar algunos lugares, también poder disfrutarlos. Una de las cosas que más me gustó fueron los medios de transporte, esos carros antiguos que nos llevan en un viaje al pasado y al mismo tiempo a contemplar lo mucho que hemos avanzado con el paso del tiempo.

As we walked and observed the glass display shelves, we also saw relics—antique typewriters, clothing irons, sewing machines, shoes, dolls, and small houses made of cane and painted.

Mientras caminábamos y observas en una especie de estantes de vidrio, también hay reliquias, maquinas de escribir antiguas, planchas de ropa, maquina de coser, zapatos, muñecos y casas pequeñas hechas de caña y pintadas.

On its walls, we can see important figures, as I mentioned at the beginning. One image that caught my attention was that of Horacio Hidrovo Velázquez, an Ecuadorian poet and writer. What made it even more meaningful to me is that the school I attended as a child—before emigrating to another country—was named after him, honoring this literary master who was also a distinguished figure of his time.
I must also highlight Eloy Alfaro, a former president and a key figure in Ecuador's history. I hope to one day take you to visit Ciudad Alfaro, a tourist site named after him, where Ecuador’s first National Assembly is located.

En sus paredes vemos personajes importantes, como dije al inicio. De esta imagen me llamó la atención Horacio Hidrovo Velazquez, quien fue un poeta y escritor Ecuatoriano, ademas de que la escuela donde estudié en mi niñez y antes de emigrar a otro país, llevaba justo su nombre, en honor a aquel maestro literario y quien también fue en su epoca una persona ilustre. También debo destacar a Eloy Alfaro un ex presidente e importante hombre en la historia del Ecuador, espero llevarlos un día a conocer Ciudad Alfaro, un lugar turístico que lleva su nombre y donde está la primera asamblea nacional de Ecuador.
And you can't visit La Olla without not only exploring and learning about the city's history but also tasting some of its delicious dishes.
This time, I had the pleasure of enjoying bacon rice, pork in mushroom sauce, and chicken in peach sauce, accompanied by a cold salad. Everything was absolutely delicious!

En esta oportunidad tuvo el agrado de degustar, un arroz al tocino, con cerdo en salsa de champiñones y pollo en salsa de durazno, acompañado por una ensalada fría, todo muy rico 😋.

I love the relics in the stained glass windows; I think it's a beautiful way to connect with the customs of the past. I like the architecture of this museum, and also the fact that it is a restaurant. I was very struck by the word “Montuno”, this word is also used a lot in Venezuela, although here it is usually attributed to a shy person.
