Hello. We traveled from Tallinn to Riga. We weren’t too late, we arrived around 8 pm. But it felt much later to me, like 11 or 12. I was especially surprised that the stores were still open. I went out for a walk early in the morning and still felt tired. I’m thinking about the girls, I can guess how they feel. Still everything was so beautiful and wonderful, I’m really glad about that.
I visited a very interesting place in the Latgale neighborhood: the Great Koro Synagogue, a memorial for the Holocaust victims. It’s a beautiful place with weeping willows and iron railings surrounding it. It says "Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire." This memorial was built in 2007 in memory of the Latvian heroes who risked their lives and families to provide shelter to people during the Nazi occupation. The names of these saviors are even inscribed here. For example, Jānis Lipke is listed, known for saving 56 people from certain death.
The history of the synagogue dates back to pre-war times. It was designed and built by architect Paul von Hardenack in 1868. The synagogue was very famous in its time because it had a choir that sang songs and recited prayers. Unfortunately, it was burned when Riga was occupied in 1941. After the war the area was cleared and turned into a square. This memorial is located on the site of the synagogue’s remains. The monument takes the shape of the synagogue’s old walls.
I had never walked here before. From a distance it seemed like an abandoned place. I love the atmosphere of such structures. This is entirely a memorial. The weather started to warm up and it was time to take off the layers of clothes we had been wearing.
There was an electricity problem last night. We arrived late at the house we rented and the electricity hadn’t come back. This morning I woke up to the TV and lights suddenly turning on. Apparently the electricity had been cut off last night and then restored. We had to charge our phones and power banks overnight. The power banks were only half charged and we used them alternately. It was quite uncomfortable. Thinking about it, it would have been more sensible for them to run the generators at night, not during the day. Because people are usually home and electricity is cheaper at night. Fortunately, they restored the electricity to the surrounding areas within a few hours.
Today I wanted to go to Jurmala, but I thought I wouldn't have enough time. Actually Jurmala is just across the river from here. It’s one of Latvia’s most popular resorts, located by the sea. It’s famous for its natural beauty, wide beaches and peaceful atmosphere. Jurmala is not only known for sea tourism but also for its wellness and spa centers. It’s a popular getaway spot for both locals and tourists, attracting attention with its art deco style buildings and forested areas. The beautiful riverfront views and natural life make it a very appealing destination.
After a bit of driving,I stopped at a very nice place to have my coffee. I had also brought my director's chair. You know these became very popular after the pandemic. I sat down, sipped my coffee and began to enjoy nature. I had previously stopped at a point by the river and had some food in the car. That place was nice too. But this place, the settlement of Bražciems, felt very peaceful to me. It’s interesting to see that people still live here. Usually cooperative-style settlements are abandoned, but this one is still active. You can smell the pine scent in the air.
The weather is amazing, a windless day. The sound of the birds around is peaceful and the coffee is delicious. It feels like a day leftover from summer, even though summer is over. The people living here still seem to be enjoying the summer.
The forested areas, silence and fresh air of Bražciems make the region attractive even towards the end of summer. Locally this area is really known as "Sosnovka" and it has a Russian name, meaning "pine forest". I stayed here a bit longer, enjoying the view, then continued my walk.
On the other side is the Livu area and the water park, just across the river. It’s a very fun place.
There’s also a bench here where the locals come to rest and fish. Around the area there are houses with gardens, really lovely. I think it would be great to rent a place here next time. If I were a local, I would love to move to a place like this. The houses are newly built, everything is renovated and the houses are really stylish. There are lots of cars, which shows that people really live here.
What a beautiful place. It’s so peaceful, I really love places like this. It’s very close to the city center but still quiet and calm. I walked a bit more, then returned to the car and headed back to the house we’re staying in.
