My son Diego's little traveling plane continues its journey. Today's stops are in Vedado. We're going to stay close to home.
That's why there is no Havana resident who hasn't had ice cream at Coppelia. And part of the experience, of course, is standing in the huge lines at this ice cream shop, as you can see.On this trip to Havana with my husband @abelarte and my children, we couldn't miss places of special meaning for me and my husband, as we are Havana natives. We now live in the province of Las Tunas. My children are indeed from Las Tunas.

The good thing about this corner of 23rd and L is that the view is very entertaining and interesting. Right in front of Coppelia is the famous Yara movie theater, home of the “Festival of New Latin American Cinema.”
Just on the other corner is the “Habana Libre” hotel
and in front, what will be the tallest building in Cuba. Everything is right in front of the ice cream shop.
Once inside, the atmosphere changes and you can enjoy delicious ice cream. Today we were lucky enough to have three flavors.

Coppelia, as I told you, is a historic meeting place for the capital's residents. That's why I happened to meet a friend from my student years at ISA: the beautiful actress Sheila Roche.
Very close to Coppelia is the “El Quijote” park. This park is known for the unique sculpture “El Quijote de América”, made by the sculptor Sergio Martínez Sopeña. Without a doubt a symbol for the capital's inhabitants.

Dieguito's rocket continued the journey with us and took us to the most important higher education institution in the country: The University of Havana.
Perhaps few people know this, but this university was paid for and built by Creoles, by Cubans in a form of protest against Spanish colonialism. At that time in the 18th century, the Spanish had political and social power, but the economic power fell to many of the Cubans of that time.
Since it was not convenient for them that Cubans studied, they did not invest in schools and even less in universities. For that reason, several of the Cubans of that time, gathered resources and built this architectural wonder. Symbol of our culture and intelligence.
Then we continued our journey to Calzada Street, in the northern part of Vedado. I showed my children the “Amadeo Roldán” Theater.
Not only where I performed many of my most important performances as a concert artist, but where I was a teacher and rehearsed many times with the guitar orchestra “Sonantas Habaneras”, under the direction of my Maestro Jesús Ortega.
It's a shame that such a beautiful building is still under repair and not open to the public. This building is an institution for Cuban musical culture.
Very close to there we saw the Hotel Presidente.
My husband says that this hotel is where many of the great writers who attend Casa de Las Américas events met and meet and/or stay.
This is a place I would also like to take my children to, but we have another itinerary.
We continue our trip to the Museum of Decorative Arts.

Already on the way home (we were already arriving), since we still had time, the boys asked to go to the zoo. So we decided to arrive, change, have a snack and leave. But first, I will show you this apartment.
What's so interesting? That many years before I met my husband, I stayed there almost every week, at a friend's house: and it's on the same block where my husband lives.
So, maybe we crossed paths many times and we didn't imagine that so much time later, we would live together.
At the entrance of the Zoo we were greeted by the sculpture of the sculptor from Las Tunas and Cuban par excellence: Rita Longa.
For the people of Las Tunas, she is a symbol and a source of great pride. There are sculptures of her all over the country.
For an urban zoo, there are quite a few animals. We were not able to tour the entire zoo, but we saw quite a lot and here I leave you with some of what caught the children's attention the most.

El avioncito viajero de mi hijo Diego continúa su viaje. Las paradas de hoy son para el Vedado. Vamos a quedarnos cerca de la casa.
Por eso, no hay habanero que no haya tomado helado en el Coppelia. Lo bueno de esta esquina de 23 y L es que la vista es muy entretenida e interesante. Junto al frente del Coppelia queda el famoso cine Yara, sede del “Festival del nuevo cine latinoamericano”.
Justo en la otra esquina el hotel “Habana Libre
y al frente, el que será el edificio más alto de Cuba. Todo queda justo al frente de la heladería.
Una vez adentro, ya cambia el ambiente y se puede disfrutar de ricos helados. Hoy tuvimos la suerte de contar con tres sabores.

El cohete de dieguito continuó el viaje con nosotros y nos llevó hacia la casa de altos estudios más importante del país: La Universidad de La Habana.
Quizás pocos lo sepan, pero esta universidad fue pagada y construida por criollos, por cubanos en una forma de protesta hacia el colonialismo español. En aquella época del siglo 18, los españoles tenían el poder político y social, pero el económico recaía en muchos de los cubanos de entonces.
Como no les convenía que los cubanos estudiaran, no invertían en escuelas y menos en universidades. Por eso, varios de los cubanos de entonces, reunieron recursos y construyeron esta maravilla arquitectónica. Símbolo de nuestra cultura e inteligencia.
Después continuamos viaje hacia la calle calzada, en la parte norte del vedado. Les mostré a mis hijos el Teatro “Amadeo Roldán”.
No solo donde realicé muchas de mis más importantes presentaciones como concertista, sino donde fui maestra y ensayé muchísimas veces junto a la orquesta de guitarras “Sonantas Habaneras”, bajo la dirección de mi Maestro Jesús Ortega.
Es una lástima que tan hermoso edificio esté aún en reparación y no abierto al público. Este edificio es una institución para la cultura musical cubana.
Muy cerca de ahí vimos el Hotel Presidente.
Dice mi esposo que en ese hotel es donde se reunían y reúnen y/o hospedan muchos de los grandes escritores que asisten a los eventos de Casa de Las Américas.
Este es un sitio al que también quisiera llevar a mis niños, pero tenemos otro itinerario.

No me detendré mucho en mostrarles las obras del museo, porque este grandioso lugar, es merecedor de un post solo para él. De momento, admiren este vitral en el techo.

Y aquí una muestra de una pieza en exposición transitoria.
Ya de camino a casa (ya estábamos llegando), como aún teníamos tiempo, los muchachos pidieron ir al zoológico. Así que decidimos llegar, cambiarnos, merendar y salir. Pero antes, les mostraré este apartamento.
¿Qué tiene de interesante? Que muchos años antes de conocer a mi esposo, yo me quedaba casi todas las semanas ahí, en casa de una amiga: y queda en la misma cuadra donde vive mi esposo.
O sea, que quizás nos cruzamos muchas veces y no nos imaginaríamos que tanto tiempo después, viviríamos juntos.
En la entrada del Zoológico nos recibió la escultura de la escultora tunera y cubana por excelencia: Rita Longa.
Para los tuneros, ella es un símbolo y motivo de gran orgullo. Hay esculturas de ella por todo el país.
Para ser un zoológico urbano, hay bastantes animales. No pudimos recorrer todo el zoológico, pero vimos bastante y aquí les dejo algo de lo que más le llamó la atención a los niños.
Quizás los animales no sean los más vistosos, pero es un zoológico muy lindo.
Aquí vemos a Dieguito poniéndose el arnés para saltar en una tirolina.
Y de esta manera concluimos nuestra visita a La Habana. Hay más que contar, claro. Por ahora solo me comprometeré a mostrarles el Museo de Artes Decorativas, pero eso será más adelante.
