In 1499, Alonso de Ojeda, accompanied by the navigator Amerigo Vespucci, entered northern South America through a large gulf in the Caribbean Sea, today the Gulf of Venezuela, as far as Lake Maracaibo.
They observed wooden constructions that, in the form of small settlements or villages, jutted out over the water.
Vespucio, who was reminded of Venice, named that region as “little Venice” or “Venezziola”, which is a diminutive of the famous and legendary Italian city; and that, later hispanized, became the word Venezuela.
The name of our country.
These constructions are still today part of the so-called water villages or fishing villages that are on the shores of the largest lake in South America and are witnesses of thousands of years of history.
An early morning walk, a history of thousands of years
This morning, while it was dawning along one of these paths in Santa Rosa de Agua in Maracaibo, my friend Hector and I were talking about the origin of the name of our country, Venezuela.
Many defend a simpler and autochthonous origin, related to these indigenous people of the Añú ethnic group, who already lived in these palafitic settlements at the arrival of Américo Vespucio and Alonso de Ojeda.
These inhabitants used in their dialect an indigenous word, “venezuela”, which means big water, alluding to the great lake of Maracaibo where these settlers had been living for years.
Being here transports you to other spaces, to other times...
Life has been flowing here for millennia
Historians and archaeologists have determined that, although the Añú inhabitants of these settlements have left little evidence in the form of vessels and tools of daily life, it is believed that these settlements are between 2,000 and 6,000 years old.
Children in loincloths who today wear modern clothes have played in these wooden streets; and in the waters they have found sustenance from purebred inhabitants, to the present, with evident Hispanic racial mixtures.
Legends and fights
Hundreds of legends were born here, those that tell of warriors who fought to the death against Spaniards and Christians, to defend this land and its customs with their own blood.
Also those that, romantically, tell of forbidden loves between beautiful women and brunettes who, kidnapped by white European conquerors, ended up giving their souls and their hearts, some of them dying of love before an attacked and forbidden relationship.
The lake has also witnessed great battles against pirates and Europeans who came for the gold, the crops and their women.
From these houses cannons firing, smoke, fire and sinking ships were seen.
Life here today is not so different
Today, Santa Rosa de Agua, on the shores of Lake Maracaibo, in its wooden walkways, attracts the tourist and the local, with restaurants, craft stores, markets, plazas in honor of its warrior chiefs and in honor of its lake.
Its houses are still homes of people who do not know how to live another culture, another way of relating to the land, in a symbiosis of love between their customs and their lake.
Its people, of ancestors with soft features, rounded faces, remain friendly, open, coherent with the respect they have for their lake and the land that has seen them grow and exist for millennia.
How to get to Santa Rosa de Agua?
This town is located in the capital of the state of Zulia, Maracaibo, the second largest city in Venezuela, in the north.
It can be reached from Milagro Norte Avenue, which borders the coast of Lake Maracaibo, and we reach the wooden walkways and its buildings, through 6B Avenue and 38th Street, which connect the town with the big city; and it has a good transportation system.

En 1499, Alonso de Ojeda, acompañado por el navegante Américo Vespucio, entró al norte de Sudamérica por un gran golfo del Mar Caribe, hoy, el golfo de Venezuela; hasta el lago de Maracaibo.
Observaron construcciones de madera que, en forma de pequeños asentamientos o poblados, sobresalían construidas sobre el agua.
A Vespucio, que eso le recordó a Venecia, nombró esa región como la “pequeña Venecia” o "Venezziola", que es un diminutivo de la famosa y legendaria ciudad italiana; y que, hispanizado luego, se transformó en la palabra Venezuela.
El nombre de nuestro país.
Estas construcciones aún hoy en día forman parte de los llamados pueblos de agua o pueblos de pescadores que están a las orillas del lago más grande de Sudamérica y que son testigos de miles de años de historia.
Un paseo muy temprano, una historia de miles de años
Esta mañana, mientras amanecía por una de estas caminerías de Santa Rosa de Agua en Maracaibo, mi amigo Héctor y yo conversábamos acerca del origen del nombre de nuestro país, Venezuela.
Muchos defienden un origen más sencillo y autóctono, relacionado con estas personas indígenas de la étnia Añú, que ya vivían en este en estos asentamientos palafíticos a la llegada de Américo Vespucio y Alonso de Ojeda.
Estos habitantes utilizaban en su dialecto un vocablo indígena, “venezuela”, que significa agua grande, aludiendo al gran lago de Maracaibo donde se asentaban desde hace años estos pobladores.
Estar aquí transporta a otros espacios, a otros tiempos…
Aquí la vida fluye desde hace milenios
Historiadores y arqueólogos han determinado que, a pesar de que los habitantes Añú de estos poblados, han dejado poca evidencia en vasijas y en herramientas de vida cotidiana, se cree que estos asentamientos tienen entre 2000 y 6000 años de antigüedad.
Por estas calles de madera han jugueteado niños con taparrabos que hoy visten ropas modernas; y en las aguas han encontrado el sustento desde habitantes con pureza de raza, hasta actuales, con mezclas de razas hispanas evidentes.
Leyendas y luchas
Aquí nacieron cientos de leyendas, las que cuentan sobre guerreros que lucharon a muerte contra españoles y cristianos, para defender con su propia sangre esta tierra y sus costumbres.
También las que, románticamente, relatan amores prohibidos entre mujeres hermosas y morenas que, raptadas por blancos conquistadores europeos, terminaron entregando sus almas y sus corazones, algunas de ellas muriendo de amor ante una relación atacada y prohibida.
También el lago ha sido testigo de grandes batallas contra piratas y europeos que venían por el oro, las cosechas y sus mujeres.
Desde estas casas se divisaron cañones disparando, humo, fuego y barcos hundiéndose.
La vida hoy aquí, no es tan diferente
Hoy, Santa Rosa de Agua, a las orillas del lago de Maracaibo, en sus caminerías de madera, atrae al turista y al local, con restaurantes, tiendas de artesanía, mercados, plazas en honor de sus caciques guerreros y en honor de su lago.
Sus casas siguen siendo hogares de gente que no sabe vivir otra cultura, otra manera de relacionarse con la tierra, en una simbiosis de amor entre sus costumbres y su lago.
Su gente, de ancestros con facciones suaves, rostros redondeados, siguen siendo amables, abiertos, coherentes con el respeto que tiene a su lago y a la tierra que los ha visto crecer y existir desde hace milenios.
¿Cómo llegar a Santa Rosa de Agua?
Este poblado está situado en la Capital del Estado Zulia, Maracaibo; la segunda ciudad más grande de Venezuela, en la zona norte.
Se llega desde la avenida Milagro Norte, que bordea la costa del lago de Maracaibo, y llegamos a las caminerías de madera y a sus construcciones, por la avenida 6B y la calle 38, que conectan el poblado con la gran ciudad; y tiene un buen sistema de transporte.

I live a few miles from there, to the north, near Colombia, and all along the shore of Lake Maracaibo there are villages with wooden houses on the water.

Me encantó todo: conocer las teorías sobre el origen del nombre de Venezuela, el repaso por la historia del país y las espectaculares fotografías con las que acompañas tu relato. Es asombroso que se haya logrado mantener durante siglos ese poblado que le gana terreno al lago, estos lugares son símbolos de identidad para los pueblos. Se piensa que la étnia Añú tiene más de 6000 años en la zona, pero siempre han sido trabajadores de la pesca y han dejado muy poco para ser constatada su antigüedad; lo cierto es que aún conservan gran parte de sus costumbres y siguen viviendo a la manera en que lo han hecho desde mucho antes de la llegada de los conquistadores.

Que lugar hermoso. Aunque de noche no me gustaría escuchar ese mar enorme creo que me intimidaría
Es un lago enorme; pero de noche es apacible realmente con cielos estrellados; aunque hay noches ventosas (yo vivo a sus orillas actualmente); y lo cierto es que tiene muchas islas y se pueden ver los poblados, las luces de los puertos, una parte de la orilla que está al frente con sus luces de ciudades y, a lo lejos, en ocasiones se puede ver el Relámpago del Catatumbo; un rayo perenne que cada día ilumina cientos de veces las noches del sur del lago.
Intimida su grandeza, sí, pero es un reglao de la naturaleza, y allí en sus poblados palafíticos, nació el nombre del país.
