Because it’s found on the road between the houses of Mike’s mom and brother, we’ve driven past Ferncliff Cemetery hundreds of times. And it was also the scene of the city’s July 4th fireworks, in 2022, which we were in attendance for. But we had never paid the cemetery a real visit until being lured in by the fall colors.
As October became November, the temperatures were dropping, and the foliage season was approaching its end. So, one frosty morning, we bundled up and drove into the cemetery to take some pictures before the remaining leaves had fallen to the ground. We got lucky, because the sun was shining, and everything was covered in ice crystals… including our car! Because we live in Valencia, Spain, and normally avoid winter like the plague, we had forgotten what a delightful task scraping ice off car windows is!
Founded in 1863 as a non-profit designed to provide an affordable last resting spot, the Ferncliff Cemetery is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year, and we couldn’t believe that this was the first time we’d bothered driving through its entrance gates. It might sound weird, but we’re kind of big cemetery fans, and usually make an effort to see one during our trips abroad.
We drove slowly into Ferncliff, letting ourselves be pulled toward the places in which the fall colors were most glowing, and eventually parked so that we could walk around. The scenery was so gorgeous, and so close to home, that we kind of felt like it couldn’t be real. Just look at these colors!
But it was real, and we spent a full two hours wandering around the cemetery until our fingers started to turn blue and our toes began to cramp up, and the idea of warming up inside a coffee shop became irresistible.
