Trip to the old ruined Church Saint Martin in Dugo selo, on hill Martin breg.🏰
When I was a kid, I heard a lot of times the story of tunnels that connected almost the whole Europe in the Medieval. The tunnels were hidden underground, in this area under the church was one of the entrances to the tunnels.
The oldest visible above-ground remains of the building date from the 16th century. It is said that there was an older church of Saint Martin that stood at this location, which was first mentioned in sources in 1209. It was first owned by order of the Templar knights, then it was taken over by knights order of the Hospitaller.
Since 2002 archaeology studies have been carried out. The most important discoveries so far were stone tombstones from the 13th century.
We decided to go for full tour around the church and take photos from every side.
This is in front of the church, gate and pile of old rocks.
Church has been pretty damaged from war, windows hanging, cracks all over, just scary. Such a shame... 😔
Even if the church is in ruins, nature is next to it to make it better. Plants growing on walls, showing us that they don't need much for surviving.
The view from this hill is amazing. 💓
When I look at that old church, I can't help but feel curious about how it started, and what it's been through and seen over the last 500 years. And that even today after so many years, we can look at her remains. What story would the remains told us if they could?
On one part of the church the Common ivy ( Hedera helix L.) is growing al over the surface. This ivy is common climbing plant. You can see it almost on every abandoned building.
This plant has heterophilia, which means it has two different kind of leaf.
Photo from the spot that used to be inside of the church. Here you can see that one part is repaired.
On this one is also the repaired part with doors that leads to entrance of the tunnels. The entry to the tunnels is forbidden because is dangerous to go there due to bad condition.
Few shots from the meadow little under the Saint Martin Church.
We found this bumblebee pollinating the flowers.🌸
Beneath the church is a small park with wooden statue of Saint Martin. Park was full of flowers too, so beautiful with so many colors.
On this pitcure you can see Common bird's foot trefoil ( Lotus corniculatus L.)
All photos were taken by us. Hope you enjoy it and have a good day. ☺️🌿🌞
