Let's travel together #229 - Cascada Pruncea (Cașoca) (Pruncea Waterfall)

A waterfall that will take away in a moment all your worries and reasons of being stressed or sad, because both its beauty and calmness do a great job to make you become part of nature even for a short period of time.

I don't know how, but back in the past years we were always ending up exploring at least five waterfalls during the yearly road trip we take around Romania.
Somehow things have changed along with all the 10+ years since we do this family expedition, focusing more on interesting natural formations, unique places in the world that are on the territory of Romania, or simply unknown locations even for the rest of Romania.
Our passion for seeing waterfalls was born at the very start of our trips, exploring them even when I was on an excursion with the rest of my classmates when I was no older than 12 years old and when I realized that it's more of a family bug because my parents also loved to travel and see different locations in Romania.
First, we started with short trips here and there with nothing too serious, until we ended up hiking for many hours in a row to reach a specific destination or follow a circuit that will include more points of interest along its way.
However, just as I said, the things we wanted to see in the last 2-3 years and the priorities have changed a bit, and that's how we roamed for quite a few days in the summer of 2021 before we've seen the first waterfall in that year.

The name of the waterfall is called Pruncea but it's also known as Cașoca which is both the name of the river that is flowing in the area, but also the name of the village where you can find it. However, this time we felt blessed not to have to hike because the access to the waterfall is very easy for anyone and you can get pretty close to it by driving the car which will save a lot of time!

But even if it was a pretty quick journey, we did spend some good minutes enjoying the time when it was just us and the waterfall. On a normal day, this place would look a lot more crowded and with many tourists around, but since we were making our way towards it after a rainy period, not too many dared to do the same so I'm happy we could listen again the songs offered by nature.

Because visiting Pruncea Waterfall felt like the right place where you can lose yourself not being sure whether it's a dream or reality... felt like visiting a place where nature becomes your brother while water is your sister... and last but not least, felt like one of the places where you can easily transpose yourself in a different world.
And these kinds of feelings are the ones who will always make us want to keep seeing waterfalls no matter how big or beautiful they are because I'm sure they all have different stories to be listened to by those who want to find out what makes them so different from the others.
And I know that this might not be the "cleanest" waterfall you will see today being shared on the chain, but if you would visit Pruncea on a normal day and not after lots of storms and rains, then be convinced that it will make you fall in love with its crystal clear water.
Perhaps we should visit this one again when we get the chance to, just to refresh the memories created in the last summer, and remember it as a blue and beautiful waterfall instead of a muddy one but still with a curious story behind its name.

A story that some have named after the famous Robin Hood but which is way too little known by those who are coming to see the waterfall because there is no informative panel sharing it so you have to search on Google and find out what's everything about.

That's also how we found out that the little shelter formed in the stones on the left side as you look at the waterfall, used to be some sort of hidden place used by an outlaw from Tudor Vladimirescu's army who was stealing goods from some of the richest people from that area back in 1821-1827.

According to the legend, the outlaw was always hiding the goods in the cave that now is almost closed due to the rocks which fell over, but even though he was doing bad things he never hesitated to share the 'rewards' with the rest of the people who were helping him in his missions.

The legend comes to an end with a sad story saying that still in this place the outlaw met his death when one of the people he was stealing from, pushed him from a rock which made him fall and die. But despite all these aspects, the locals said that he was a good man with a nice soul and very kind to others.

The dimensions of the waterfall are pretty small compared with what we have seen in other sides of Romania. This one measures just 5-6 meters in height, but the best part is that you won't be able to say that you've seen "just another waterfall" because the whole place represents a bundle of joy, beautiful formations, silence, and memorable spots that even though you will capture with either a camera or your own mind, they will remain there forever. At least this is how I felt and I'm sure I wasn't the single one.

Another thing that I appreciated is that even though it's a fairly modernized place that can be accessed very easily by anyone, the place managed to keep its wilderness. That's how it was also the first time when I noticed some sort of foam that is being formed on the shore which is basically created when the debt of the water is very powerful and it hits the rest of the water breaking a single drop in thousands of particles where some of them create this foam.

A foam similar to the one we see appearing on top of a glass with fresh milk, but which is the real proof that nature has maintained its properties no matter how many people have seen it by now.

In order to reach the waterfall, keep in mind that this is located just 5km away from Siriu Dam which is the right landmark for many interesting spots you can see while roaming the Buzau county. So if you start your journey from this point, you will need to leave the national road DN10 that is surrounded by the lake, and make your way to Cașoca village for which you will find quite a few road signs nearby.

However, you will drive on a paved road just for a short period of time because half of the distance is made on a forest road which can be used by any car, not only SUVs or 4x4s but which can become a little bit more challenging if you drive on it after a rainy period.
