Let's travel together #237 - Cheile Bicazului (Bicaz Gorges)

Following a scenic route is definitely a great experience while travelling, but being surrounded by one along with your whole trip is what I call next level!

I've always said that during my journeys I try my best to keep myself away from the overcrowded places that Romania is mostly popular for because there are endlessly more options to pick from whether you want to see waterfalls, caves, gorges, or even just learn a little bit more about the history and of course the past of the country.
However, on the way to these less known spots we were seeking, we had to drive on Cheile Bicazului which no matter how long you are going to stay in Romania, you will most likely end up visiting them, especially since we are talking about a scenic route through the mountains that doesn't involve any effort or time spent hiking but just to look around you and observe the embrace of the stones.
Personally, I discovered this place together with my family and some other members of our group (because back then we were travelling in big groups of 20+ members), which was somewhere around 2012.

Though, being just a kid with many hopes and big dreams, I didn't own any camera or at least a phone to take good pictures so all I have from that time are just memories. Anyway, that seemed like a pretty good excuse to take advantage of crossing the gorges again on the way to our next destination, and hence why I will write about this location even though is amongst the most popular attractions from Romania.

Perhaps you already figured out that the main attraction at this place are the high stone walls which are very close to the street and create spectacular landscapes no matter what the season is.

However, along with the wonderful view, all these stones are home to many mountain routes, some being explored in my future posts. But the thing that makes the stones so special are the green details which are turning either into red or white during the autumn and winter and which are making the mountains seem like being permanently dressed with different clothes.

The whole trail between the rocks was dug by the river with the same name (Bicaz) and the gorges are dating since the Jurassic age with the same stone walls standing still for hundreds of years without getting bored of meeting new tourists every day.

Knowing the length of the gorges for sure is hard because some people out there consider them only at the point where I took most of the pictures while some think they are a lot longer and actually split into 4 sections where the most important part is to the point from my pictures which can be associated with a canyon having the stone walls so close to you.

Therefore, it's a little bit irrelevant this aspect since you will have to cross them entirely no matter whether they start at this point or earlier because there is not an alternative route so you will still have to drive on the same road for quite a while.

Still at this point you will find lots of booths with more or less traditional things to be sold to the tourists but which have been here for so long that they started to be part of the gorges themselves, and it's a little bit hard to cross by without stopping to see what they sell.

Though, what I like is that they don't try to take advantage of the tourists and the prices are quite fair, also selling plenty of bio and natural syrups, sherbets, chocolate and more.

Bicaz Gorges are not just a beautiful place which can be reached very easily by car but they also make the connection between Transylvania and Moldavia so in order to reach them you need to follow the national road DN12C until you enter Gheorgheni and from there follow all the way to Bicaz which is where the scenic route ends.
