Let's travel together #334 - First Ladies’ Fashion Exhibition (at Prague’s National Museum)

What's the most interesting exhibition you attended? Or museum? Or... both?

When it comes to museums it's hard to think of anything else but the history or important events a country has been part of, exposing some of the objects that resisted with the passage of time and earned their place on one of the shelves of a museum.

As technology has evolved a lot in the past few years, I started thinking that we can expect a bit more than what I mentioned before, possibly getting to see some interactive computers, holograms or who knows what else?

What I did not expect to see though, was an exhibition. Or better said an exhibition with and about women.

Here's a picture of the National Museum of Prague that I still have to write a proper article on, but keep in mind that not only the building itself stirs curiosity but also how things were arranged within the walls of the construction, speaking about an old side of it with all the history and moments of the past of Prague, while one represents the modern side of it, with a lot more gadgets and stuff that perhaps seem familiar for the younger tourists.

Anyway, in between the two, there was a special space for the exhibition which I will dedicate my post of today for. And honestly, our exploring couldn't have started better considering that we were a group of five girls, visiting the beginnings of fashion!

None of us had a special outfit to accompany the luxury and elegance we were about to see in the following minutes, but the thing that we could attend such a unique exhibition was already making our hearts beat faster.

And if fashion is not really one's passion, keep in mind that there are quite a few displays with elements other than clothing items and accessories, as well as get to read some really cool paragraphs attached on more spots, starting with the mirror resting in front of the exhibition to the informative panels' places around each element of the exhibition.

Here's one of them that I really liked and felt like taking a picture of, so I can re-read it whenever I feel like doing so, especially since I have a pretty urban style when it comes to wearing clothes and sometimes elegance is needed.

First Ladies’ Fashion Exhibition presents the clothing items of the wives of Czech and Czechoslovak presidents in the last one hundred years, the outfits being divided into two rooms, where one is for the costumes showing the first ladies' official duties alongside the president, while the other one is part of a semi-private category with the ladies being under scrutiny even when they pursue their hobbies or their professional career.

The exhibition will not only make dozens of outfits catch your attention almost at the same time but will also take you on a ride of time where you can admire the fashion evolution, as well as how different the outfits were from one season to another.

What makes things even more unique and special is that every single "First Lady" had its own preferences and stylistic approaches, almost offering a personality to every single outfit you see.

Along with the outfits that no doubt will catch the most attention, there were some smaller displays that included items that accompanied the presidents themselves, whether being used directly for their day-by-day needs or to decorate their homes.

Still in the same kind of displays, you can also find specific accessories used by the "First Ladies" such as their shoes, handbags or even wallets, proving how strong the attention was even on the smallest details.

Exhibitions like this allow us to see how fashion is more than aesthetics, also being a reflection of cultural values, political climates, and personal identity.

Things are even more important especially for "First Ladies" who are often under intense scrutiny, their outfits being both a medium of self-expression and a strategic tool to send messages without using words. This makes their fashion a powerful and sometimes understated part of political and social history.

First Ladies’ Fashion Exhibition was located within the new building of Prague’s National Museum from May 12 to December 10, 2023. I'm not sure if the exhibition was extended but you can find the National Museum of Prague at Václavské nám. 68, 110 00 Nové Město, Cehia and it's open daily between 10 AM and 6 PM.

A visiting ticket is needed and the prices start from 300 CZK (~12 EUR) per person.

It's very interesting to know about history and culture of Czech republic. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Cuba.

You are very welcome @gabrielatravels! it was well deserved. ☀️
Keep up the great work 💪

It must have been fascinating seeing how the fashions changed over the years, quite a job to be a first lady, always under scrutiny in public!
Hope the new year is treating you well @gabrielatravels 🤗

Indeed. Had no clue it's going to be such a fantastic experience until seeing everything with my own eyes :)
As for the new year.. it started with a loss in my family. So I don't really have any plans or expectations but just want to stay all safe and healthy as much as we can.
Hope you have a great 2025, my dear! ❤️

I will allow myself a small addition, because I am at home in Prague. There is an anomaly in the photo with the three ladies' red dresses. Mrs Havel is dressed in baroque style and wearing a crown. Mrs. Havel was an actress by profession. This is not an ordinary formal evening dress, but a theatrical costume.
Thank you for promoting the Czech Republic. I love my country.

Had no clue about that! Thanks for the addition, it's always great to learn something new despite what I gained through my trips.

I saw some beautiful photos, it really cheered me up ❤️

Happy to hear that ❤️ Hope you are well!
