Greetings traveling and adventurous community. Do you like museums? Today I´ll take you for a walk through one of the most important museums in the world, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens in Greece. The first time I visited this museum was with my classmates when I was in 4th or 5th grade, we went with our teacher. It was a walk that left us fascinated since we could finally see up close several of the statues and ancient pieces that we had only seen in books. In the middle of 6th grade my family and I moved to Venezuela (my native country, although my parents are Greek). A few years ago, as an adult, I traveled to Greece to spend my summer vacations and among the many places I visited, I returned to this museum that I liked so much the first time I went. Because there are too many photos I decided to divide this interesting walk into three parts. In this first part I´ll talk to you about the history of this famous museum and I´ll show you the most striking pieces it houses, in the second part another group of works of art and in the last, a sample of the collection of Egyptian art that is on display:
Un poquito de historia: El Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Atenas, conocido hasta 1881 como Museo Central, fue construido entre 1866 y 1889. El responsable del proyecto para su construcción fue el primer ministro griego Ioannis Kapodistrias y el diseño arquitectónico estuvo en manos de Ludwig Lange, aunque ciertas partes de sus planos fueron parcialmente modificadas por el arquitecto principal, Panages Kalkos. Este museo se construyó con fondos del gobierno griego, la sociedad de Micenas y la sociedad arqueológica, a su vez contó con varios benefactores, entre ellos, Eleni Tositsa, quien donó el terreno y Demetrios y Nikolaos Vernardakis quienes aportaron una gran suma de dinero para su construcción.
A bit of history: The National Archaeological Museum of Athens, known until 1881 as the Central Museum, was built between 1866 and 1889. The person in charge of the project for its construction was the Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Kapodistrias and the architectural design was in the hands of Ludwig Lange, although certain parts of his plans were partially modified by the main architect, Panages Kalkos. This museum was built with funds from the Greek government, the Mycenae society and the archaeological society, in turn had several benefactors, including Eleni Tositsa, who donated the land and Demetrios and Nikolaos Vernardakis who contributed a large sum of money for its construction.
Esta edificación tiene un diseño neoclásico que combina perfectamente con los objetos que alberga. Su colección está compuesta de más de 20.000 piezas y es la más completa del mundo de la antigua Grecia, siendo el Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Atenas, el más grande de Grecia. La exhibición está hecha de manera cronológica (desde la prehistoria hasta la Grecia Romana), incluyendo colecciones del antiguo Egipto y el Medio Oriente y se encuentra repartida entre dos plantas. El museo también cuenta con una biblioteca, laboratorios de conservación para las piezas de terracota, metal, materia orgánica y piedra, un laboratorio de química, uno de fotografía, sala de conferencias, tienda y cafetería.
This building has a neoclassical design that combines perfectly with the objects it houses. Its collection is made up of more than 20,000 pieces and is the most complete in the world of ancient Greece, being the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, the largest in Greece. The exhibition is done chronologically (from prehistory to Roman Greece), including collections from ancient Egypt and the Middle East, and is spread over two floors. The museum also has a library, conservation laboratories for pieces of terracotta, metal, organic material and stone, a chemistry laboratory, a photography laboratory, a conference room, a shop and a cafeteria.
El museo abrió al público en 1891. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el museo fue cerrado y todas las piezas y objetos de la colección se guardaron en cajas protectoras que a su vez fueron enterradas para resguardarlas de saqueos y de cualquier tipo de daño y deterioro al que pudieran estar expuestas. Al terminar la guerra en 1945, el museo volvió a abrir sus puertas y afortunadamente sin perdidas que lamentar en su colección.
The museum opened to the public in 1891. During World War II, the museum was closed and all the pieces and objects in the collection were kept in protective boxes that were buried to protect them from looting and any type of damage and deterioration to which they may be exposed. At the end of the war in 1945, the museum reopened its doors and fortunately with no losses to regret in its collection.
La colección cuenta con objetos de varias civilizaciones y culturas griegas que existieron a lo largo del tiempo y que están expuestos de manera que permitan al visitante entender e imaginar cómo vivían esas personas. Entre estos objetos hay vasijas, platos, joyas, figuras de cerámica, etc. Debido al inmenso número de piezas y objetos que posee y al hecho de que es imposible tener todo en exhibición, el museo mantiene con frecuencia exposiciones temporales. El Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Atenas depende directamente de la Dirección General de Antigüedades, un organismo que forma parte del Ministerio de Cultura. Ahora sí, empecemos la visita jejeje:
The collection features objects from various Greek civilizations and cultures that existed throughout time and are displayed in a way that allows the visitor to understand and imagine how these people lived. Among these objects there are vessels, plates, jewelry, ceramic figures, etc. Due to the immense number of pieces and objects it holds and the fact that it´s impossible to have everything on display, the museum frequently holds temporary exhibitions. The National Archaeological Museum of Athens reports directly to the General Directorate of Antiquities, a body that is part of the Ministry of Culture. Now yes, let's start the visit hehehe:
El día que planifiqué visitar el museo arqueológico me levanté temprano para aprovechar bien el día jejeje porque en mi agenda estaban dos lugares, la galería de arte nacional, que no conocía, y luego, este museo, el más grande y famoso de Grecia. Llegué poco después de las 2 de la tarde, ya había almorzado así que no me preocupaba cuántas horas iba a estar allí adentro jajaja, de hecho, estuve un poco más de cuatro horas y solo me percaté de la hora cuando salí del museo, me senté un rato a descansar en las escaleras y vi mi reloj jajaja, sin duda que me absorbió la antigua Grecia.
The day I planned to visit the archaeological museum I got up early to make the most of the day hehehe because on my agenda there were two places, the national art gallery, which I didn't know, and then, this museum, the largest and most famous museum in Greece. I got there just after 2pm, I had already had lunch so I wasn't worried about how many hours I was going to be in there hahaha, in fact, I was there for a little over four hours and I only realized the time when I left the museum, sat down to rest for a while on the stairs and saw my watch hahaha, there´s no doubt I was absorbed by ancient Greece.
Estábamos en el mes de Agosto, lo que en Grecia significa temporada alta, turismo y días largos. La capital griega, muy concurrida en tráfico y movimiento durante todo el año, queda prácticamente desierta durante el verano ya que la mayor parte de la población se va a vacacionar a las islas y al interior del país así que caminar por Atenas en verano es una experiencia agradable y tranquila. Las calles se llenan de turistas entusiasmados por conocer la cultura helénica así que todo lo relacionado a la antigua Grecia como ruinas, monumentos, museos, lugares históricos, etc. se vuelve el destino preferido de cualquiera que visite a este hermoso país.
We were in the month of August, which in Greece means high season, tourism and long days. The Greek capital, very crowded in traffic and movement throughout the year, is practically deserted during the summer since most of the population goes on vacation to the islands and the interior of the country, so walking around Athens in summer is a nice and quiet experience. The streets are filled with tourists excited to learn about the Hellenic culture as well as everything related to ancient Greece such as ruins, monuments, museums, historical places, etc. it becomes the preferred destination for anyone who visits this beautiful country.
La entrada al museo, como todo lo que está allí, es espectacular. Apenas entré me sentí transportada a la antigüedad. La primera sala tiene paredes y techos blancos en los cuales están distribuidos los bombillos en forma de reflectores que proporcionan una iluminación agradable, cálida y que no interfiere con la belleza de las estatuas y piezas que se encuentran allí. A pesar de esto, las salas tienen unos ventanales que permiten la entrada de la luz natural, lo que me pareció genial. El piso es de color terracota y los marcos que conectan a cada sala con la otra están hechos de mármol.
The entrance to the museum, like everything that is there, is spectacular. As soon as I walked in, I felt transported back in time. The first room has white walls and ceilings in which light bulbs are distributed in the form of reflectors that provide pleasant, warm lighting that doen´t interfere with the beauty of the statues and pieces that are there. Despite this, the rooms have large windows that allow natural light to enter, which I thought was great. The floor is terracotta in color and the frames that connect each room to the other are made of marble.
En la primera sala a la que entré se encuentran las estatuas más antiguas, una en particular, destaca por su gran tamaño, robusta contextura y por los hermosos detalles de su cabellera. Estas figuras son llamadas “Kuros o kouros” y representan a hombres jóvenes y también están las “Kore” que representan a las mujeres jóvenes. Este tipo de estatuas se distinguen por su geometrismo, rigidez, frontalidad, inexpresividad y por el material en el que están hechas, principalmente piedra y mármol.
In the first room I entered are the oldest statues, one in particular, stands out for its large size, robust texture and the beautiful details of its hair. These figures are called "Kuros or kouros" and represent young men and there are also "Kore" that represent young women. This type of statues are distinguished by their geometry, rigidity, frontality, inexpressiveness and by the material in which they are made, mainly stone and marble.
Los kuros son representados siempre desnudos ya que en la época arcaica griega la desnudez era asociada a los héroes y la perfección divina. El estilo de los kuros está influenciado por el arte egipcio, grandes ojos almendrados, brazos pegados al cuerpo con los puños de las manos cerrados, rostro inexpresivo y la postura de un pie adelantado al igual que las estatuas que representaban a los faraones, con la gran diferencia que los egipcios cubrían las estatuas con ropajes y otros artilugios mientras que los griegos los dejaban desnudos para mostrar al máximo la belleza, la fuerza y la perfección de los cuerpos y de la juventud.
The kuros are always represented naked since in the Greek archaic era nudity was associated with heroes and divine perfection. The style of the kuros is influenced by Egyptian art, large almond-shaped eyes, arms close to the body with clenched fists, an expressionless face and the posture of one foot forward, just like the statues that represented the pharaohs, with the big difference that the Egyptians covered the statues with clothes and other gadgets while the Greeks left them naked to show the beauty, strength and perfection of their bodies and youth to the maximum.
Las kore eran más variadas ya que se esculpían con ropas e indumentarias diferentes y siempre cargaban algún objeto en una o ambas manos, a diferencia de los kouros que solo eran representados desnudos y con la misma tipología.
The kore were more varied since they were sculpted with different clothing and always carried an object in one or both hands, unlike the kouros that were only represented naked and with the same typology.
Entre las piezas más imponentes y espectaculares que alberga este museo está el dios del cabo Artemisio, conocido también como Poseidón o Zeus ya que aun no se ha podido determinar si lo que sostenía en su mano derecha era el tridente del dios del mar o el rayo de Zeus. Es imposible no quedarse admirando esta estatua al entrar en la sala donde se encuentra, su belleza es realmente tan imponente como la perfección de sus formas. Una de las cosas que me gustó es que cada sala tiene una persona que cuida el comportamiento de los visitantes, es decir, que no toquen las piezas, que mantengan un tono de voz moderado, que no utilicen flash para las fotos y lo más importante, esta totalmente prohibido tomarse fotos con las estatuas o con cualquiera de las piezas, así que nada de selfies con Zeus ni Atenea, lo que me pareció excelente.
Among the most impressive and spectacular pieces that this museum houses is the god of Cape Artemisio, also known as Poseidon or Zeus since it hasn´t yet been possible to determine if what he held in his right hand was the trident of the god of the sea or the lightning of Zeus. It is impossible not to admire this statue when entering the room where it is located, its beauty is really as impressive as the perfection of its forms. One of the things that I liked is that each room has a person who takes care of the behavior of the visitors, that is, that they do not touch the pieces, keep a moderate tone of voice, that they do not use flash for the photos and most importantly it´s totally forbidden to take photos with the statues or with any of the pieces, so no selfies with Zeus or Athena, which I thought was excellent.

Esta estatua me trae muchos recuerdos de la primera vez que visité el museo cuando estaba en 4to grado, es de la que más me acuerdo de esa visita y ese inolvidable encuentro con la antigua Grecia.
This statue brings back many memories of the first time I visited this museum when I was in 4th grade, it´s the one I remember the most from that visit and that unforgettable encounter with ancient Greece.
El Efebo de Anticitera es otra de las estatuas de bronce que destacan por su tamaño y belleza.
The Ephebe of Antikythera is another of the bronze statues that stands out for its size and beauty.
Otra de las estatuas que impacta a los visitantes por su gran belleza es la Atenea Varvakeion, considerada la copia más fiel de Atenea Pártenos, la famosa estatua crisoelefantina (de oro y marfil) de 12 metros hecha por Fidías que se hallaba en el interior del Partenón y de la que hasta ahora se desconoce su paradero.
Another of the statues that impacts visitors due to its great beauty is the Athena Varvakeion, considered the most faithful copy of Athena Partenos, the famous 12-meter chrysoelephantine statue (of gold and ivory) made by Phidias that was inside the Parthenon and whose whereabouts are unknown until now.
Me encantan los museos, el Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Atenas es fascinante, la disposición de las piezas y sus espacios te transportan a la antigüedad, la tenue y cálida iluminación es perfecta y te ayuda a concentrarte en la contemplación de cada estatua y cada obra que se encuentre allí, el silencio y la normativa de mantener un tono de voz moderado te hace sentir que estas en un lugar donde el tiempo se ha detenido. I love museums, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens is fascinating, the arrangement of the pieces and their spaces transport you to antiquity, the dim and warm lighting is perfect and helps you concentrate on contemplating each statue and each piece of art that is found there, the silence and the regulation of maintaining a moderate tone of voice makes you feel that you are in a place where time has stopped.
