My favorite part was the sandbar. I had read about it before seeing it in person, and it was something completely different. This long, bared stretch of sand becomes visible during low tide, when the beach and the nearby uninhabited Bang-og Island are connected. The sand bar was like stepping into another world. The experience felt surreal, with water on either side. I found I had to stop every few steps to take in the stunning beauty around me, the glistening sea, the soft clouds above, the sensation of being far from everything.
Bon Bon Beach (hiding from pandemic tourists) took some effort to get to but was well worth it. I took a ferry first to Romblon Island. Then I hopped on a trike to the beach, a short and pleasant enough journey. The travel only heightened my anticipation, and I was just ready to savor it all when I got there. The instant I saw the beach I knew it would be a special day.
What surprised me most about Bon Bon Beach was how tranquil it was. There were no big resorts, no blaring music, only the sounds of nature. I spent hours just sitting on the sand, watching the waves wash in and out. The water was so clear I could see little fish swimming near the shore. The water was calm, so swimming was easy, and we swam and floated around.
This is my view of the sandbar going to Bang-og Island and it was so much more magical in person. I can recall how I stood there seeing how the white sand stretched out into the turquoise, blue water like a path into another world. The bright sand, turquoise sea and lush green island made for a mesmerizing contrast. Walking that stretch, I felt like I was in a paradise out of time.
This one reflects a peaceful moment, how when I looked out at the horizon, the clouds shift how light played, again, a falsehood between your eyes. The gentle beams of sunlight piercing through the clouds seemed to be Mother Nature’s spotlight on the ocean expanse. I just stood there, the breeze touching my face, the waves whispering the story of the dohim. One of those instances, where I was in touch with everything but also completely OK with me.
While this one transports me to prospect of the beach itself with soft, white sands connecting to the still, peaceful waters. This section of Bon Bon Beach was my little corner of peace where I could sit and bask in the sun while listening to the gentle lapping of waves. With the hills behind it and the greenery around it, this beach felt warm and intimate, as if it were a piece of earth all to myself.
Walking across the white sand bar to Bang-og Island remains one of my own unforgettable experiences. The island is also small and rugged, with a natural beauty that gives it the feeling of a hidden gem. I didn’t linger too long, because I wanted to get back to the main beach before the tide came in, but just being there was sufficient. The stroll back along the sandbar, with the sun beaming down and the sea stretching out on either side, was one of the most serene moments I’ve ever had.
I packed everything before going to Bon Bon Beach. There are no stores or restaurants nearby, so I packed snacks, water and a towel. But I put on a lot of sunscreen, since the sun can be stronger, especially in the afternoon. My decision to come at low tide was a great one, as it meant that I was able to really enjoy the sandbar.
I stuck around to catch the sunset at the end of the day, which was gorgeous. The colors melted together forming splashes of orange, pink, and purple that were mirrored on the peaceful water. Today, as I sat there watching the sun go down I felt so very grateful. It’s moments like these, though, that show me just how beautiful life can be when you take the time to enjoy the little things. But I forgot to take a picture of it.
Bon Bon Beach is more than just a destination, it’s an experience. It’s a space that feels frozen in time, and you can simply exist. The gentle sand, the clear water, and the stillness of the sandbar combine to make something special. To me, it was much more than a trip, it was a lesson in the strength and solace of nature. If ever you’re in the mood to escape, to breathe and reconnect with yourself, Bon Bon Beach is the place. I walked away with a full heart and a vow to return, realization that I’ll always carry it with me.
