From Havana to the Basecamp - Closing the circle of my Lat-Am trip...

in Worldmappinlast year

Every trip has it's final destination. For me it is my base in Serbian mountains. My little garage/bunker where I go to after I get annoyed with with Hostel Life...

As I have mentioned, my time spent in Havana wasn't necessarily the highlight of my summer trip and so I was more than ready to leave Cuba. The airport has about the same luxury goods as the city itself. This means no food! I was lucky and had my cheese sandwiches with bananas in my bag. Other unfortunate travelers found out the hard way and have been surviving on beer only. Damn, writing about it now from comforts of Europe is weird.

Anyhow my flight to Madrid went smooth and I caught a connecting flight to Sofia - Bulgaria with ease. Definitely easier than trying to buy that ticket from Cuban internet. It was literally one full afternoon spend on battling the bot protection on the airline's website as the internet speed on Cuba is so slow, the page kept thinking I am a robot. So as you can imagine I was more than happy to arrive to BG and enjoy some fruits of civilization again.

Arrival to my Basecamp went as planned. From Sofia I need to take a bus to Serbia and finish it of with Taxi. Overall cost of that is around twenty EUR, so if I go to my place for longer than few nights it is a trip well worth it as I save money on rent that way. It is however just a mountain hut in the mountains so the price for rent free existence is payed differently. No electricity and running water means a lot of work. However I do not feel like working doing simple activities like bringing water canisters. If one night survived there means I save ten euros at hostel, it is still a great deal.

Every night I made a big fire to grill some Serbian meat. This part of the world is known for not being that vegan friendly. And why would anybody eat avocados in Serbia... Europe is not a continent of never ending summer, so vegan diet is a questionable lifestyle to a degree.

Autumn weather kicked in and trees turned red and yellow. It was my first time to be here at this time of the year. I must say it is different than spring, but both seasons have something to it! In the spring time I have more sun at my garden and in autumn on the other hands there are apples and walnuts to be found almost everywhere.

Springtime however feels more energetic, as nature is waking up from the winter dream. Autumn is the other way around and by passing days one feels more and more tired as colder weather is approaching.

I have found a little beach near the river about five kilometers away and started using it as my private bathroom. The situation with water in Autumn is slightly different than spring too. The mountain dries out and I have to go an extra mile to find it. Luckily it is not an unsolvable issue and I can say that Autumn is definitely a livable season at my Basecamp. I have even installed a stove to make sure. As colder nights are a reality now, a stove can prolong the time I can spend there for a month or two.

I found a new plan though. And that is to go on a small trip again! This time moving eastwards for a change. So my Latin American being officially over, stay tuned for some totally different reports soon...

All the best,
