A great thing about Madrid is that the city is surrounded by mountains. It only takes 30 minutes to the nearest range, Sierra de Guadarrama. It’s not particularly high; most peaks only have around 2,000 meters of altitude, yet it still offers plenty of hiking and climbing opportunities. Besides, there’s a hidden craft microbrewery at the foot of the mountains, which I’ll cover in a separate post for Beer Saturday. Naturally, we ended up sampling the local brews upon our return to Manzanares el Real. Speaking of the town, it boasts a Legoland-style castle, Castillo Nuevo. Despite the name and picturesque appearance, its construction began in the late 15th century. It actually served as a residential palace for centuries. Nowadays, the castle and its gardens are open to the public, hosting a museum of Spanish castles. We didn’t have time to visit it, but we might give it a shot next time.
Na Madridu je mimo jiné fajn, že je to do hor co by kamenem dohodil. Za nějakou půlhodinku jízdy se dostanete třeba do pohoří Sierra de Guadarrama. Ne že by to byly nějaké velehory, vesměs jsou tu dvoutisícovky a nejvyšší hora má jen nějakých 2 400 metrů, ale jsou tu zajímavé trasy a na své si přijdou i horolezci. Taky je tu minipivovar, o kterém se ještě rozepíšu pro Beer Saturday. Samozřejmě jsme ho nemohli vynechat. Je v městečku Manzanares el Real, kde se mimo jiné nachází i tenhle hrad, který vypadá tak trochu jako z Legolandu. Castillo Nuevo, Nový hrad. Jménu navzdory až tak nový není, postavili ho už na konci 15. století a několik set let sloužil jako palác jedné větve rodu Mendozů. Dneska je uvnitř muzeum španělských hradů a sbírka tapiserií. My se dovnitř nepodívali, nezbyl nám čas. Ale T. už tam kdysi byla.
If you come in the summer, your hike would likely start at the edge of the town, not far from the castle. In May, you can reach the upper parking lot closer to the mountains, saving yourself from walking a road for several kilometers. That’s the furthest point you can get by car. Note the ads promoting the local microbrewery; I considered them a good sign.
V létě bychom auto museli nechat na kraji městečka, kousek od hradu. Ale v květnu se ještě dá dostat na parkoviště pod horami, takže se nemusíte vláčet pár nudných kilometrů po silnici. Tohle je poslední výspa civilizace na horním parkovišti. Všimněte si reklamy na místní pivo. Dobré znamení, no ne?
This little creek is, in fact, the Manzanares, the river that passes through Madrid and joins the Tagus (Tajo) south of the city. We started heading upstream towards a set of waterfalls at about 1,500 meters of altitude. They are not high either, but it’s just a nice hike through a late spring forest and later up the rocks. See for yourselves.
Tenhle potůček je Manzanares, řeka, která protéká Madridem. Ona tedy není nijak extra vodnatá ani dál po proudu, nepředstavujte si ji jako Dunaj třeba v Budapešti. Kousek na jih od Madridu se vlévá do řeky Tajo, a to už je jiná písnička. My se každopádně vypravili proti proudu, v nějakých patnácti stech metrem nad mořem jsou totiž oku libé vodopády. Ty samozřejmě taky nejsou nijak významné, ale je to hezký hike jarním lesem, a později i po skalách.

When the snow melts in the mountains (yes, it usually snows in this part of Spain), the Manzanares swells and gets deep enough for swimming. This stretch of the creek has been attracting canyoneers. However, swimming in the river is currently forbidden as it is a source of drinking water.
Nu,vodopády... Není lehké se k nim dostat, bujná vegetace má trny a skaliska kloužou. Tohle je každopádně ten prostřední, Chorros del Retén. Protože jsem fotil shora, budete si muset ten vodopád představit :)
On taky vypadá jinak třeba v březnu, kdy nahoře v horách taje sníh. Ano, v téhle části Španělska v zimě normálně sněží. Manzanares se vylije z břehů a láká fanoušky canyoningu. Dneska už se v ní ale lidé koupat nesmí, je to zdroj pitné vody.
So much for the creek. We took the same path back, descended a few hundred meters in altitude, and then headed up again to Collado del Cabrón – Billy-goat Saddle. Many wild goats live in the mountains, but we didn’t see any on the first day, not even in the place named after them. However, we were about to meet donkeys.
Nechme potok potokem a vraťme se o pár set výškových metrů zpátky. A pak zase nahoru, do Collado del Cabrón, Kozlího sedla. Horských koz je tu spousta, ale první den jsme žádné nepotkali. Narazili jsme ovšem na osly.
The refugio we slept in is not far from the saddle. You can even spot it on the opposite slope once you start descending.
Refugio, ve kterém jsme přespali, není od sedla daleko. Tady ho už dokonce můžete vidět vykukovat na protějším svahu.
Most refugios are just huts you can use in case of emergency or when you’re feeling adventurous. Several, like Refugio Giner de los Ríos, are maintained and provide a tad more comfort. You should call in advance and book your spot, especially if you’re about to hike on weekends. Don’t expect any luxury; there's usually a single dormitory with bunk beds and no bathroom – they are next to a spring, which is all you get in terms of hygiene. In the most fancy ones, dinner and breakfast are provided, as was the case for us. For €30 per person, it's a bargain.
Většina refugios jsou opravdu jen horské chýše, kde můžete v případě nouze přespat. Nebo se do nich můžete vydat i cíleně. O některé, jako třeba o Refugio Giner de los Ríos, se ale někdo stará, a tak nabízejí alespoň trochu toho pohodlí. Určitě doporučuju zavolat předem a rezervovat si postel, hlavně v sezoně nebo o víkendech. A nečekejte žádné pohodlí, i v těch nejluxusnějších bude jen jedna místnost s palandami. Místo koupelny si budete muset vystačit s pramenem - refugios vždycky stojí vedle nějakého. Na druhou stranu někde dostanete i snídani a večeři. Tady byl nocleh a jídlo za nějakých 30 euro, což je úplně parádní cena.
And how do you get supplies to such a secluded place? Well, there’s a method proven by centuries, if not millennia – donkeys will do the job for you. Gonzalo, who runs the place, has two, making trips to the nearest parking and back to the refugio day by day so that spoilt hikers like us can have a bit of comfort. The grey donkey is female, and the brown one is male.
A jak se to jídlo do takhle odlehlého refugia dostane? Inu, je tu jedna staletími osvědčená metoda. Oslové očividně náročný terén slušně zvládají. Gonzalo, který se o refugio stará, má hned dva, šedou oslici a hnědého osla. Každý den s nimi pendluje na nejbližší parkoviště a zpátky, aby rozmazlení výletníci, jako jsme třeba my, měli něco teplého do žaludku.

It is just a safe place to sleep and recover from a day of hiking or climbing. If you are tired enough, you might even find it quite comfy. By the way, the dormitory accommodates up to 44 people.
Refugio znamená úkryt, a přesně to to je. Místo, kde po celodenním treku nebo lezení po skalách složíte hlavu. Když budete dost unavení, asi vám to přijde i pohodlné. Do téhle ložnice se mimochodem poskládá až 44 spáčů.
And it even has an outhouse :)

What a beautiful country I live in. One can have everything - a big city and nature like this, so close. I see a lot of stones... :D could pick some haha, but as you say the stones are slippery - then it is not for me. I fell yesterday when we were in the mountains and there were just smaller rocks which rolled under my feet 😅
