7 Million bulbs. Keukenhof. The Netherlands. April 23

in Worldmappinlast year

Keukenhof, is about 25 miles south west of Amsterdam and covers an area of approximately 80 acres.

_DSC1063.jpeg

It is often referred to as the Garden of Europe and is one of the largest flower gardens in the world. It is a gorgeous place to visit if you like colour and shed loads of pretty flowers.

_DSC1060.jpeg

At the start of October, numerous local bulb growers donate in the region of 7 million bulbs for planting. That keeps the 40 or so gardeners busy right up to early December organising and synchronising the displays that are only enjoyed for a short 8 week period between late March and mid May.

I had to wait an age to grab decent snaps as the place was full of visitors, at times it was quite a fucking pain in the arse. I can't be doing with mixing with the great unwashed, crying kids, push chairs, flotsam and jetsam ambling along without a raison d'etre.

Often then stopping without notice, without purpose, causing me to walk into them. Looking quite aghast when I question "Like, what the fuck are you doing?"

_DSC1103.jpeg

I wish I could just upload without a rant! back to the pretty flowers......for now.

Fritillaria, members of the Lilly family, give height to the displays, shame they attract those bastard lilly beetles I am forever finding them in my garden, and on average £5 a bulb an expensive feasting ground.

Love bee hotels, probably not warm enough yet for the solitary bee to be looking for a room to let.

Stunning use of scrap metal, but at a price, this Dragon is for sale at an eye watering 15,000 euros.

Keukenhof is self sufficient, it does not receive government subsidies; all its revenues are generated from ticket sales and the food, beverage and concessions on site.

In 2019 Keukenhof generated €25 million in revenue.

"Can't disagree with that old bean."

Gift shop/bulb shop. Gave that a miss, think the tube at rush hour in Mumbai and double it, pushing and shoving in the search for over priced tat.

7 million bulbs
1 million global visitors expected.

@tipu curate

cheers @ninahaskin thanks for that x

I have never seen this many flowers in my life personally so it surprised me really. There were lots of flowers and I couldn't recognize most of them. But they are all pretty. Are they scented as well?

cheers @dennnmarc thanks for stopping by, no alas fragrance free, there were a few hyacinths coming to the end of their blooming season which were nicely scented but thats about it

Wow, the tulips and all the flowers are beautiful, but I especially loved the 16th photo, the water channel and the blooming tree above it. Sublime.

Hahahha, the comment of the old statue observing the other statue 😂😂
He was not bored lol

Cheers, yes the cherry blossom framed it quite well and no bloody tourists in the way!!

I agree he does have a rather smug grin on his face lol

and no bloody tourists in the way!!

A few can be seen in that photo too, crossing the white bridge :D

LOL, just a few

OMG! This is as packed as I would expect. I would also get crazy with kids and those crowds. My nightmare is walking in the crowd and not being able to move at my own pace as I'm actually STUCK in the crowd 😂

I didn't know that the bulbs are donated. Then it's a great business for Keukenhof, since they don't need to pay for the 'raw material' and charge huge fee to get in (of course I understand they still have a lot of cost but 7 million bulbs for free makes a difference 🙂)

Thank you for taking us on a tour with you!

cheers @delishtreats

My sentiments entirely about being stuck amongst the mob, I guess it works both ways, the gardens get the bulbs and those that donate get the advertising for their wares

I can't be doing with mixing with the great unwashed

LOL, take a clothes peg with you next time.

Far too busy for my tastes. You should get to those '3 beauties' you mentioned to me while the sun shines (unless they are already done).

they are done dusted and uploaded months ago lol

I read "short 8 week period" and was going to reply like "c'mon, it's a lit of time", and then I saw the crowd in the next picture 😁
Anyway, you did great and took so many excellent shots!

cheers @zirochka , toooooooo many people.

what a beautiful plant.

Fritillaria eduardii flower I have never seen, what a beauty.

Too many people set the dragon upon them... 7 million bulbs spectacular beauty.

Overload of colours all in one place.

a riot of colour I would say

Yup, sounds about right!

😂👍

That's a heck lot of people, way more than when I was there last year!

And every time I see a keukenhoff post or set of photos like from my family who went last month, I always see a new angle or view that I haven't seen before. Fascinating!

It is a popular place, probably didn't help that it was a Sunday when the visit took place.

Spectacular images you captured! I thoroughly enjoyed this post. I've never seen so many cultivated flowers in one place. It must have smelled so nice, despite all the people.

You fought the mob so we don't have to 🫠.

cheers @emanate-artworx thanks for stopping by, glad you enjoyed the pretty flowers. The hyacinths had fantastic scent coming off them

I adore these flowers. thanks for sharing

Wow- the crowds were certainly overwhelming. I was there again 2 days after you were there and did not have those drives of people.

Great photos but sorry that it was not so much fun.

I guess going on a sunday, on an easter weekend was not the best idea I have ever had!!!!

It was still a wonderful place to see so many flowers in bloom
