Although the market building itself was constructed over a 20 year period starting in the early 1860's it was not given its name until the year 1910, in commemoration of the start of Mexico's war of independence.
Think Mercado de San Miguel, Madrid, just a lot less sophisticated. More earthy, more real, more of an assault on the senses.
It will come as no surprise that the air was heavy with the wonderful scent of dead animals being BBQ'd, on “El Pasillo de las Carnes Asadas” so many stalls with open fires charring the meat for the, in the main, locals out enjoying the festivities.
I am still slobbering now as I gaze at this snap
Interlude....... just popping into the kitchen, I now desperately need a bacon butty, back soon.
I am back, now lets look at some bread things.
Pan de muerto, or "dead bread", is synonomous to the Día de los Muertos and is an essential part of the Ofrenda de Muertos, the bread and other items are placed on an altar at home to honour the deceased family members.
Surely that is a recipe for disaster? prawns sitting around in the heat.
No matter how many herbs and spices are added; man you gonna get the shits eating those prawns.
A nice selection of Mezcals to aid the digestion

Eating prawns standing out like that, no way! Spice shops bring some interesting selection, eat the prawns you might as well drown yourself in sorrow on a bottle or two hugging a chucky....
!BEER Nice photographic share.
That is what I was thinking, but I don't eat seafood even when if it is fresh. YEUCH
Very seldom buy, although do prepare my own in the home, not often as family are not big fish eaters.
Thirty years ago I had no problem buying from fish markets, today rely on local fishman for catch of the day to purchase on very odd occasion.

The vivid description and the snapshots really paint a picture of the bustling marketplace. From the aroma of BBQ'd meat to the cultural significance of Pan de Muerto, your narrative brings the place alive.

the market is very crowded, apart from the busy market activity and every shop there looks beautiful, I also really enjoy every picture you share in this post, it's amazing
cheers @aquagelas thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate your kind words and comments. It was a remarkable place to see yes indeed. glad you enjoyed
It was in Oaxaca where I first visited a real Mexican market, though it was the Central de Abastos, not the 22 de Nov. It simply blew my mind. A place you could literally spend all day discovering, and you still haven't seen all the things you can buy. Simply incredible!
have to agree with you there it is a real assault on the senses. I loved it.
