The Water Gypsies of Barisal (1).jpg

So on my wanderlust travels I have seen some spectacular markets and I love them, get amongst the local people and snap away, try and see life through their eyes.

This today was a first for me a market with a difference

A welcoming party, probably thinking "WTF are these white faces doing here"

I am thinking "WTF am I doing here"

Time to dodge the cow shit and get amongst the action

The market at Wazipur is one of sixteen permanent livestock markets in Barisal District. Though in mid June a further 33 licences are granted to cope with the increased need for meat for the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha.

Spot the Tesco Tee shirt, how that has got here beats me!

_DSC6749.jpeg

It is an open air trading centre where cattle are bought and sold under a simple method.

_DSC6747.jpeg

Sellers bring their cows along,

_DSC6753.jpeg

Buyers bring their dosh along (average price for a bull is £600, whereas a cow can cost about £1400)

_DSC6748.jpeg

A little bit of haggling

_DSC6746.jpeg

Deal done, it is not for me to comment upon who takes a cut to avoid paying govt. taxes.

_DSC6758.jpeg

There is technology afoot! A rise in online market places and cattle auctions, who not only buy and sell for a fee but also provide capital finance to buy. Wonder when that Bezos creep will stick his nose in?

_DSC6754.jpeg

I hope these markets continue long into the future, a great place for catching up with like minded individuals, chew the fat, spread the gossip, put the world to rights.

and chew down on Betel nuts and gawp at a handfull of " WTF am I doing here" westerners.

cheers @riyat you too

It's not the cows that catch my attention but the clothing, so much so that I did some research.

A lungi is a loop of cloth, somewhat like a very, very loose skirt or a sarong.

😜👌

Yes that is correct, worn by the majority of country men
