A stroll through the centre of Tetouan, Morocco

in Worldmappin2 days ago

Hello everyone,

I'm delighted to open my PC to make another post in this wonderful worldmappin travel community, this time I'm sharing with you a beautiful walk I recently took in the town of Tetouan, a town that bears the imprint of time, a fascinating blend of Andalusian heritage, Spanish influence and Moroccan authenticity. I decided to explore the town centre on foot.

I parked the car in the underground car park just below Place Feddan, also known as Place España. It's a great spot, right between the old medina and the modern city centre. As soon as you step outside, you are immediately struck by the beauty of the square: a large open space with a magnificent view over the white roofs of the old town. It used to be a meeting place and a place of commerce, and even today the atmosphere is as lively as ever!

As I wandered around, I noticed a poster talking about the renovation of the square. The square has been improved in recent years as part of a major project to modernise infrastructure throughout Morocco. It's wonderful to see how these historic places are being preserved while being adapted to meet today's needs!

Leaving the square, I began my walk along Boulevard Mohamed 5. Crowded cafés, clothes and craft shops, and above all, remarkable architecture. What particularly attracted me was the style of the buildings, strongly reminiscent of the Spanish era, with their white facades adorned with beautifully detailed balconies. You can still feel the colonial influence that gives Tetouan its unique charm, and I really appreciated the fact that the old buildings have been preserved in this style.

Continuing on my way, I arrived at Place Moulay El Mehdi, another of the city's central squares. Here, the atmosphere is just as lively, with passers-by of all ages and genders crossing the square, in the middle of a large roundabout surrounded by cafes and patisseries .... . What really catches the eye is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Victorias church, another striking vestige of the Spanish period. I really liked its elegant architecture, which contrasts with the surrounding environment and gives a great idea of Tetouan's multicultural history.

Afterwards, I headed for Place Michouar, right next to the Royal Palace. This place is a true symbol of the city's prestige. The palace, with its high, imposing walls and large, ornate gates, is a fine example of Moroccan architecture, which is generally found in almost all historic and modern palaces. The place is also bustling with guards in traditional dress, keeping watch over the royal enclosure.

Finally, my walk ended with an immersion in the traditional souk of the medina. As I walked through the door of the souk, which is right next to the royal palace, I was immediately drawn into an explosion of colours, scents and sounds, a veritable sensory voyage where I could feel the authenticity and richness of the local heritage.

I hope this walk has transported you to the narrow streets of Tetouan and inspired you to explore this magnificent city. Thank you for taking the time to read me, and see you soon for another post!
