Hello everyone!
Today, I want to take you on an unforgettable walk through the old medina of Meknes, more specifically in its southern part, where the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is located. For more details on this mausoleum, click here!
My day began early in the morning, when I decided to explore the ancient medina of Meknes. I headed for the southern part, an area brimming with historical treasures and authentic charm. As I entered the narrow, winding streets, I was immediately transported back to another era. The stone houses, carved wooden doors and hanging lanterns create a unique atmosphere reminiscent of centuries gone by.
These extraordinary Riads are located behind the majestic mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and, frankly, it's the first time in my life that I've discovered these hidden places. Continuing my walk through the picturesque streets of the medina. I had the pleasure of meeting several local craftsmen. I had the idea of chatting to a few of them to learn more about their techniques and traditions, but I preferred not to disturb them and continued my discovery of these alleyways!
After a pleasant walk, I found the perfect place to have breakfast: the terrace of a traditional restaurant offering a panoramic view of the medina.
The table was beautifully laid with a red and white patterned tablecloth, adding a touch of charm. Breakfast was served on a wooden tray, containing a variety of delicacies. There was a tasty omelette topped with slices of cheese and meat, accompanied by bowls of small black and green olives and yoghurt, and a metal teapot of Moroccan mint tea, perfect to round off the meal.
As I was sitting on the terrace, an elderly man was sitting at the table next to me. We chatted for a while, he was a native of Meknes who had lived in the medina all his life, and he told me some fascinating stories about the history of the city, the local legends and the changes he had seen over the years.
On my way home, I took a path that leads down a street in the northern part of the Medina, which leads to a beautiful mosque called Zitouna. The Zitouna Mosque is one of the great historic mosques in the city of Meknes. It was built in 1687 by the Alaouite sultan Moulay Ismaïl. The mosque was included on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1996, as an integral part of the historic city of Meknes.
