Last week while on vacation, we managed to stop in and visit Edlingham Church, mostly by chance - it just happened to be close to something else we were visiting, so we stopped into to see it.
The church was built in the 11th century and has clear Norman architecture in its design. Its correct name is St John the Baptist, Edlingham !
I have to say that it was stunning, a wee hidden gem. The inside could be described as basic - but to me it was beautiful.
Its quite a rural church, in a small community, but you can tell that it is very much a large part of that community. Just look at the lovely prayer/seat cushions they have made.
They were really fantastic and each one was different.
It had a few lovely stained glass windows like the one above.
And I adored the one above - so simple, so beautiful !
And above is the light shining through one of them.
I just loved the rough stone arches, which looked fantastic against the white washed walls and dark wooden roof.
And just look at the lovely stonework in the supporting pillar above.
Above is a view of the back of the church, and again you can clearly see the Norman architecture.
You can also see Edlingham castle in the background from the graveyard around the church.
And look at the lovely carving in the gravestone above - there was just beauty everywhere you looked.
We really did enjoy the church, such a lucky find - what an absolute wee gem of a place !
Nice to see you enjoyed your holidays with plenty of old stones to see! Mine finish tomorrow, depressing!

Same here - they are fantastic buildings !
Is that grave from 1314? Damn that's old. I love the history of such places... to imagine my country is only 522 years old, an infant \o\
I think its 1914, so still over 100 years. But there will be graves that are much older beside the church, and some will be unmarked now.
Oh yeah, now that you said I had to zoom in. Loos like oct 6 1914
Ohh that looks awesome! I love England.
