¿Sabías qué? En la Habana Vieja se encuentra una Plaza de Armas que alberga varias joyas coloniales de la historia de Cuba: El Templete y el Palacio del Segundo Cabo, pues hoy se llenan de simbolismo, tradición y belleza para los visitantes. ¡Acompáñame en este maravilloso recorrido 😉!
To begin this adventure with you, I will tell you that the colonial gems located in the Plaza de Armas, one of the most emblematic squares of Cuba, has a special charm, distinguished by an exuberant and majestic garden, where history merges with nature, besides showing some classical sculptures (Fernando VII and Carlos III).
Para comenzar esta aventura con ustedes, les comentaré que las gemas coloniales ubicadas en la Plaza de Armas, una de las más emblemáticas plazas de Cuba, tiene un encanto especial, que se distingue por un jardín exuberante y majestuoso, donde la historia se funde con la naturaleza, además de mostrar algunas esculturas clásicas (Fernando VII and Carlos III).
The Palacio del Segundo Cabo was built in the last decades of the 18th century, between 1770 and 1791, as part of the urban improvement project around the square. Its address is O'Reilly Street #4 between Av. del Puerto and Tacón, right in the restoration epicenter of the Office of the Historian of the city.
Its architecture presents a neoclassical baroque style, in local limestone, full of hollows and marine calcareous incrustations. A beautiful natural garden and with French windows and lucetas of blue and white colors.
El Palacio del Segundo Cabo fue construido en las últimas décadas del siglo XVIII, entre 1770 y 1791, como parte del proyecto de mejoramiento urbano en entorno de la plaza. Su dirección es calle O’Reilly #4 entre Av. del Puerto y Tacón, justo en el epicentro restaurador de la Oficina del Historiador de la ciudad.
Su arquitectura presenta un estilo neoclásico barroco, en piedra caliza local, llena de oquedades e incrustaciones calcáreas marinas. Un bello jardín natural y con ventanales francesas y lucetas de colores azul y blancas.
To visit it today is to go back to that distant past where large halls, interior courtyards and high props were common elements of great distinction in colonial buildings.
We are welcomed by the large portico at the entrance, with a globe at the top, marking Cuba's travels to European countries.
Visitarlo en la actualidad, es remontarnos a ese pasado lejano donde los grandes salones, los patios interiores y los altos puntales eran elementos comunes y de gran distinción en las construcciones coloniales.
Nos recibe el gran pórtico de la entrada, con un globo terráqueo a lo alto, que señala los viajes de Cuba a países europeos.
The majestic building has ample spaces, office space and ceremonial rooms. The museographic room that most impressed me for its creativity of the artist, attractive and impressive is the historical technological mural.
Regarding the European presences and their contributions that can be appreciated in the rooms of Arrivals and Migrations, the Cabinet, Plastic Arts, Cuba, Architecture and Urbanism, Cartography, Music and Dance, the Book, Interior Environment or Timeline; from audiovisual materials, panels with infographics, kiosks with technological equipment to search and expand the visual information that is observed or heard, tactile tables and virtual trips through transcendental moments of history that influenced the formation of our identity.
El majestuoso edificio posee amplios espacios, locales para oficinas y salones ceremoniales. La sala museográfica que más me impresionó por su creatividad del artista, atractiva e impactante es el mural tecnológico histórico.
Referente a las presencias europeas y sus aportes que podrán apreciarse en las salas de las Llegadas y Migraciones, el Gabinete, Artes Plásticas, Cuba, Arquitectura y urbanismo, Cartografía, Música y danza, el Libro, Ambiente interior o Línea del Tiempo; a partir de materiales audiovisuales, paneles con infografías, kioscos con equipos tecnológicos para buscar y ampliar la información visual que se observe o escuche, mesas táctiles y viajes virtuales por momentos trascendentales de la historia que incidieron en la formación de nuestra identidad.
There is a beautiful main staircase, very steep, leading to the upper floor. There is a model that simulates a boat, with the necessary instruments for a long trip and the most beautiful thing is the window overlooking the sea 🌊 which is very impressive to the point of seeming real.
This technology has been used to make the experience a walk through time and to express the cultural processes in a playful and unique way.
Se Distingue una bella escalera principal, muy empinada, que conduce al piso superior. Donde existe una maqueta que simula una embarcación, con los instrumentos necesarios para un largo viaje y lo más lindo es la ventana con vista al mar 🌊 que impresiona mucho al punto de parecer real.
Esta tecnología se ha empleado en función de hacer de la experiencia un paseo por el tiempo y que los procesos culturales se expresen de manera lúdica y singular.
On the other hand, during my visit to Old Havana I visited El Templete, a monument built in 1828 to immortalize and pay homage to the date on which the first mass was celebrated and the first town hall meeting held in Havana on November 16, 1519, marking its national foundation.
This religious act that the Historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal, has called “the baptism of the city”.
Por otra parte en la visita por la habana vieja conocí El Templete, un monumento construido en 1828 para inmortalizar y homenajear la fecha en que se celebró la primera misa y el primer cabildo efectuado en La Habana el 16 de noviembre de 1519 marcando su fundación nacional.
Este acto religioso al que el Historiador de La Habana, Eusebio Leal, ha llamado “el bautismo de la ciudad”.
The event was held in the shade of a large ceiba tree existing in this place, which over the years the ceiba tree died, but it is always planted another in its place to honor the historic date on which Havana was founded.
It has a simple architecture with the design of a Greek neoclassical temple, white marble floor and the front with 6 sturdy columns.
The complex is surrounded by an imposing fence of iron spears ending in bronze spikes and pillars that support cups crowned with pineapples, giving the monument a tropical touch.
El acontecimiento se realizó a la sombra de una gran ceiba existente en este lugar, que con el paso de los años la ceiba murió, pero siempre es sembraba otra en su lugar para homenajear la fecha histórica en que se fundó La Habana.
Tiene una arquitectura sencilla con diseño de un templo neoclásico griego, piso de mármol blanco y el frente con 6 robustas columnas.
El complejo está rodeado por una imponente cerca de lanzas de hierro terminadas en puntas de bronce y pilares que sostienen copas coronadas con piñas, dándole el toque tropical al monumento.
A three-sided central column with an image of the Virgin of Pilar in the upper part is also part of the entrance, where there is a bust of the first governor of Havana. This column is called “La columna de Cajigal” (Cajigal's column), who was the governor who ordered its construction in 1754 when the first ceiba tree disappeared so that there would be a reference to the place where the town named San Cristóbal de La Habana was founded. It is well preserved as part of the history of the place.
Una columna central de tres lados con una imagen de la Virgen del Pilar en la parte superior forman parte también de la entrada, donde hay un busto del primer gobernador de La Habana. Esta columna se llama "La columna de Cajigal" quien fue gobernador que mandó a construirla en 1754 al desaparecer la primera ceiba para que existiera una referencia del lugar donde se fundó la villa nombrada San Cristóbal de La Habana, se mantiene bien conservada como parte de la historia del lugar.
Inside the temple there is a bust of Christopher Columbus and on its walls there are beautiful canvases by the French painter Juan Bautista Vermay. These paintings show the first mass, the first chapter and the moment when the monument was inaugurated.
The space inside the hall is narrow and it is not possible to enter, I tried to take the photos in the best possible way so that all the paintings could be seen, but the brightness of the outside was a little disturbing to photograph and also its doors prevented a good shot.
En el interior del templo hay un busto de Cristóbal Colón y en sus paredes hay hermosos lienzos del pintor francés Juan Bautista Vermay. Estas pinturas muestran la primera misa, el primer cabildo y el momento en que fue inaugurado el monumento.
El espacio dentro del salón es estrecho y no se puede entrar, traté de tomar las fotos de la mejor manera posible para que se vieran todas las pinturas, pero la claridad del exterior molestaba un poco para fotografiar y también sus puertas impedían una buena toma.
Finalizing the content, as a tradition in Cuba that there is a mixture between Spanish and African cultures, the ceiba is a sacred tree according to the African religion, it is said that it gives good luck if touched, kissed or hugged, for that reason on the eve of November 16 many people go to the ceiba of El Templete to make wishes, the ritual is to go around the ceiba 3 times counterclockwise while touching it and making a wish.
Finalizando el contenido, como tradición en Cuba que hay una mezcla entre las culturas españolas y africanas, la ceiba es un árbol sagrado según la religión africana, se dice que da buena suerte si se toca, se besa o se abraza, por esa razón en la víspera del 16 de noviembre van muchas personas a la ceiba de El Templete a pedirles deseos, el ritual consiste en dar 3 vueltas alrededor de la ceiba en contra de las manecillas del reloj mientras se toca y se le pide un deseo.
Over the centuries, the ceiba tree and El Templete have become a symbol, not only of the capital, but also of Cuban society, of the marked syncretism and the Hispanic-African cultural encounter that unmistakably distinguishes the Greater Antilles.

This was such a cool read! I didn’t know much about El Templete or the Palacio del Segundo Cabo before, but your post really brought them to life. The way you described the architecture and the little historical details made me feel like I was walking through Old Havana myself.
