Hello, Hive :)
It's Friday, yay! Hope everything is well with you.
We went on a wee adventure sometime ago to a lovely place called YueXiu Park which is a very large (860k sqm) recreational park in Guangzhou City with a lot of things to see (lakes, gardens, ancient walls, historical sites, pagoda etcetera). A mix of natural and man-made attractions, old and modern kinda - amusement, swimming pool, restaurants, stalls, gymnasium, museum etcetera. It was a huge place that for me, a day won't be enough to enjoy all its beauty.
But today, I'm going to just share about the historical stone sculptures called the Five-Ram Statue which is found at the Yuexiu Mountain. We were there late afternoon after enjoying the other surrounding areas like the NanYue King Mausoleum.
The eleven meters statue stands on top of the mountain and it's one of the most visited sites in the park.
Legend has it that many centuries ago during the Western Zhou Dynasty, 5 immortals, each riding a ram holding six strings of corn millet spray in their mouths, descended into "Chuting", Guangzhou's name during those ancient times (per history).
The immortals then gave those corn millet sprays to the local people, taught them how to grow them and then expressed their wishes that there will never be a shortage of food.
And when the immortals were to leave the place, the 5 rams turned into stone and that's the reason why Guangzhou was known as "The City of Rams" per history.
From then on, the local people believe rams are symbols of good luck.
There were other interesting sculptures around the place like this below which I don't really know so I just call him "The Bow Man," lol!
It was positioned on top of a huge rock which I initially thought it might have been a welcome arch but it is not. My memory seems to have failed me on this one, lol!
