I have a dear friend living on Siquijor Island. I visit her once in a blue moon however it doesn't mean the quality of our friendship has deteriorated. It's always as if time stood still for us.
It was a 40-minute boat ride from Dumaguete City to Larena Port. Larena is the little town where she grew up and lived. I stay at her place as well every time I go visit her.
I only had three days and two nights in Siquijor so we didn't waste any time. She picked me up at the port, and went straight to her place. I met her baby for the first time as well. After an hour of catching up with her parents, eating breakfast and connecting with her little girl, we left around 9:30 a.m. to travel to our first destination - the Butterfly Sanctuary.
The place was another 30-minute travel up to the mountains. We were only riding on her scooter and the sun was already blazing. Good thing the road heading there was smooth, but it had a lot of turns.
This was the entrance to the Butterfly Sanctuary. There was a Php100 entrance fee which was pretty cheap. I noticed that the narrow pavement was built in between the hard rock soil.
There was an open porch adjoined to a house where we paid our entrance fee. They were also selling cold drinks to quench your thirst before heading inside the sanctuary.
I could consider the place like a huge garden filled with lots of plants and butterflies. The place was encapsulated with a net to prevent the butterflies from going far. There was a narrow walkway around the garden however there wasn't much shade to protect us from the scorching heat of the sun. We were the only ones at the enclosure apart from another two visitors. In the background, the sound of the birds was heard, which was nice.
I was really amazed by the variety of butterflies present. I was smiling ear to ear as I watched butterflies jumping from one flower to another. Their wings had different colors and patterns. There were also very huge ones like the size of my palm. Some butterflies were sleeping on the nets that was covered by the plants.
I also liked the smaller butterflies flying around in groups-it made me want to be a part of them. We also found beautiful yellow pupae lined along a branch. I was just filled with awe at how these small creatures come into being.
Apologies I recorded the videos in vertical mode which made it a struggle to get close-up videos of the butterflies but hopefully it is enough to show their beauty.
We roamed around in 30-40 minutes, taking our time to appreciate the butterflies that were striving in this sanctuary. We then left for our next destination.
