Getting to Ledok Sambi Ecopark

This time, we’re switching things up a bit. After more than four posts exploring the rich art and culture at the Sonobudoyo Museum, today, I’m taking you to a different kind of destination—Ledok Sambi Ecopark. This nature spot offers a blend of natural beauty and fun outdoor activities that are perfect for a day out.

Ledok Sambi Ecopark is located about 22 kilometers from the heart of Yogyakarta city, and it takes roughly an hour to get there by car. If you prefer public transportation, you can catch a Trans Jogja bus to Kaliurang, and from there, take an ojek (motorcycle taxi) for around IDR 25,000 (~1.60 USD) to reach the ecopark.

A Stunning First Impression: Mount Merapi in All Its Glory

Upon arrival, the first thing that caught my eye was the stunning view of Mount Merapi from the parking lot. Initially, our main plan was to do the Lava Tour, which involves taking a jeep around Mount Merapi, but due to an ongoing eruption, we decided to change our plans and visit this ecopark instead.

The landscape view of Mount Merapi left me in awe. This was my first time seeing a volcano up close, and it was breathtaking. The green trees, the bright blue sky with a few wisps of clouds, and the clearly visible volcano with plumes of smoke rising—everything came together to create a picture-perfect moment. My friends and I spent a good amount of time just taking in the view and, of course, snapping some group photos.

Exploring Ledok Sambi Ecopark

After we had our fill of the incredible Mount Merapi views, we headed down to the ecopark itself. It takes about five minutes to walk down the stairs to reach the park. While the steps are wide enough, the steep slope made the descent a bit challenging for me. From the stairs, you get a great overview of the Ledok Sambi Ecopark. You can see a small river with clear water flowing over rocks, several tents, and benches scattered around the area.

As soon as you reach the bottom step, you’re greeted by a cozy cafeteria that serves a variety of food and drinks. For a tourist spot, the prices are quite reasonable, starting at IDR 8,000 (~0.52 USD) for a cup of coffee and IDR 17,000 (~1.10 USD) for a plate of rice with complete sides.

The pathways in the park are paved with blocks, so there’s no need to worry about mud if you visit during the rainy season. Plus, with all the greenery around, even if it does rain, it seems like the park wouldn’t get too muddy.

Among the trees and even wild grass growing throughout the ecopark, there are also rice paddies with lush green plants that look like they were recently planted, and a mini garden filled with chili plants. It’s a refreshing sight that adds to the park’s charm.

Outbound Fun: Activities for Everyone

After wandering around and enjoying the natural features and all the greenery, I headed to the outbound area. There’s a semi-open building made of wood where you can sign up for various activities. Here’s a breakdown of the games and their prices:

ActivityPriceDetail
Gel Gun25,000 IDR1 Session
RC Car25,000 IDR1 Session
Paint Ball50,000 IDR1 Game, 25 Bullets
Archery10,000 IDR1 Game, 7 Arrows

For Paint Ball, it’s a team game, so I played with my coworkers—five people per team. Besides the outbound activities, the ecopark also offers camping packages, where everything is provided, and all you need to do is show up. The camping package prices vary depending on the facilities included, and you can see them in the image below.

Not far from the outbound area, there’s also a pond. I wasn’t sure if it was meant for fish or if it’s part of the outbound experience. The pond is quite large and shallow, but I didn’t spot any fish in it.

Out of all the outbound activities available, I tried Paint Ball and Archery. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to snap any photos of the outbound activities because I was too caught up in the fun!
