Hello friends and community, how is the development of the conditions of the pandemic covid-19 in your country? I read in various news, some countries in Europe are experiencing increasing cases of covid-19 and I hope that does not make the virus covid-19 mutated as the incidence of delta virus in India. A lot of it sucks during the pandemic covid-19, as it can't travel or vacation.
I was quite sad because during the pandemic I can't have an adventure. I like traveling and browsing to a historical place or a forest in nature. This time, I want to tell you about my explorations in the year 2016 to find the coffee plants first grown in North Sumatra.
One thing I like in every way in the forest and the wild is finding a source of clean water. When to the countryside or on a trip to the forest, we can find the creeks or springs that can be drunk immediately, something that we cannot find in the city because the source water is not healthy and clean.
Hutagambir Village
Our journey begins from Hutagambir Village in Pakantan District, which is administratively located in Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra province, Indonesia. According to the info and a variety of historical literature that we have, the VOC or Dutch colonial brought coffee seedlings to the Mandailing in 1883 to be developed, and after some research and experiment, and then one of the planting locations is great there in Aek Luna Sana Hill, within 5 km of Hutagambir Village.
Although only within 5 km, the journey to get there is not easy because it can only be traversed by the walk down the path past the plantation villages, derelict plantations, and also a forest that is still natural. Our group is also aided by some villagers as a navigator in this trip.
During the trip, sometimes we also pass through the township of traditional and also the expanse of the fields and gardens of the village residents. Sometimes we also cross paths with the residents of the village who are looking for the results of the forest such as frankincense for resale and don't forget to always greet the villagers we meet, because we never know what will happen during the trip. It would be nice to always give a good impression of each of our journeys.
Nature
Throughout the journey from the village to the coffee plantation, we can see a lot of beautiful scenery and uniqueness. Birds of diverse types, primates, deer, moose, and strange herbs often can be seen during the trip. This time we found a primate in the top of the tree, it looks like it was watching us.
As we know, coffee is not native to Indonesia but is brought from outside Indonesia. However, there is interesting info when we visited Hutagambir Village, according to them before the era of Dutch colonial, coffee was already in Mandailing. Coffee seedlings were taken by the people Mandailing from Arab, when they returned to Indonesia after performing the hajj. Interesting information, to find out the back.
Old Coffee Tree
After going through a long journey through the forest and hills. We finally found the old tree coffee that we are looking for. The tree is already very high and it is already very large compared to the coffee plant in this era. To take the coffee cherry, our colleagues have to climb it.
Varieties of old coffee here is the Arabica Typica. This is the varieties of arabica coffee that first developed massively in Indonesia. At that time, the Dutch began to see coffee as an export commodity that is popular in the World. The Dutch brought coffee seedlings from Java in the 1830s, through cooperation with the companies belonging to King William 1. After that, the system of forced cultivation managed to spread the seeds throughout the region Mandailing as in Hutagambir Village. According to some experts, Arabica Coffee quality should be planted at a height of 1200 meters above sea level. Arabica Typica here by coffee farmers in Kabupaten Mandailing called with coffee jawo, it may be called like that because it was brought from the island of Java.
End Trip
This time, many people who took the cheery coffee in this old tree coffee for developed as seedlings to be planted back because in the past in 1880-the 1940s, mandailing coffee is coffee that has the auction price of the most in the world high, and is always exported to Europe and America.
We also find some stones neatly arranged as a marker of the tomb. According to villagers who participated in our trips, the stone-stone is the tomb of the Dutch owner of a coffee plantation. In 1943 the Dutch colonialism was replaced by Japanese colonial and the owner of a coffee plantation is to be a victim of the turn of the ruler at that time. Once again, this info is interesting and needs to be traced to the truth.
Our trip was finished and we went home with a lot of new information about coffee in Indonesia. For the coffeeholic like us, are in the middle of the coffee plant parents we like hypnotized and be in a different world. And don't forget to stop in at a small stall for a coffee with the residents of the village, the pleasure of drinking coffee in a traditional village, the air is cool and fresh. Plus the people are friendly and polite to guests from the outside makes us want to come many times.

I know colonialism is something bad happened in the past, but in the present and the future it becomes something that is always told and compared. Maybe, many countries in Asia or Africa to become many countries become undeveloped or worse after independence from colonialism. Like my story you can see, we got a very good coffee plantation after independence from colonialism but couldn't continue and maintain it.
