In Czech, when someone asks you where you are going on summer vacation, some people answer “Na Maltu” which can mean “To Malta” but it is generally used more sarcastically as “to mortar”, in other words – to work with mortar on a construction site” as that’s what the word “malta” means in Czech ☺
Konečně místo "na maltu" se mi dopřálo jet "na Maltu"! :D
So when my sister announced a couple of years ago that she’d be moving to Malta, at first we had a good laugh about it but then were very pleased that she chose this tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea as her home for a while, we can finally experience the real Malta!
Moje sestra se před pár lety rozhodla přestěhovat na Maltu. Nejdřív jsme se zasmáli jestli náhodou nemyslí tu maltu ale nakonec byli moooc rádi, že se rozhodla pro tento maličký ostrov uprostřed Středozemního moře.
Before my visit to Malta I didn’t really have much of expectations. The only thing I’ve been always asking myself was how come my sister doesn’t get bored or claustrophobic on such a tiny island. XD It takes one hour to drive from north to south of Malta island. (The other island Gozo, that also is part of the Republic of Malta is even smaller). However, I was very surprised when arriving and realizing how rich in culture Malta is and how much you can see there. Even though everything is practically within walking distance away.
Moc jsem od ostrova neočekávala, nikdy jsem se o něj nějak zvlášť nezajímala, abych pravdu řekla. Jediné co jsem si říkala, když se tam sestra odstěhovala, bylo, jak to, že se tam ještě nenudí nebo se necítí moc uzavřená na tak maličkém ostrově. Autem to zabere jednu hodinu přejet ostrov od severu na jih. Ale, byla jsem mile překvapena když jsem přijela a zjistila jsem jak bohatá na kulturu Malta je.
I was especially surprised by the sizes of their “cities”. For instance, the capital city Valletta has a total area of 0.8 square km! The cities are like small neighbourhoods, even though each of them has its own jurisdiction. One of my favourite places was the north of the island where the Ghadira Bay beach is (it was my first time swimming in the Mediterranean!) and the Popeye village!
Nejvíc mě šokovala velikost jejich měst. Hlavní město je sotva pár ulic. Je to jako by to byla sousedství jen s tím že každé sousedství má vlastní jurisdikci. Jedno s mých nejoblíbenějších míst byl sever ostrova kde je pláž a vesnička Pepka námořníka!
I grew up watching the cartoon and even though I saw the village just from the top of the rocks I was happy with the experience. It’s incredible how such village got built on such rocks more than 40 years ago and is still standing strong! Talking about movies, Malta is a favourite location for high cost production movies sets such as Game of Thrones!
Vyrostla jsem sledováním Pepka námořníka a i když jsem viděla vesničku jen z vrcholu skal byla to super zkušenost. Je neuvěřitelné jak taková vesnička byla postavena na takových skálách před více jak 40 lety a pořád stojí! A když už mluvím o filmech, na Maltě se natáčí nákladné filmy a seriály, jako třeba například Hra o trůny!
But now a little bit about the history of this surprisingly history-rich island! I was amazed at how full of culture the country is. The language is influenced mainly Arabic but also by Italian, English and French, driving on the left and in general, the English environment can be perceived all over. There is also strong influence of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, the capital city Valletta was named after their Grand Master who successfully defended the island from an Ottoman invasion in 1565 known as the Great Siege of 1565 and ruled Malta until it was dispersed by Napoleon in 1798.
Něco málo o historii tohoto malého ale na historii bohatého ostrova. Jazyk je hodně ovlivněn arabštinou, italštinou, angličtinou a francouzštinou. Řídí se tu nalevo a vliv anglie je viděn všude. Řád rytířů z Jeruzaléma tu měl dlouho dobu vliv a panoval tu, hlavní město Valletta se jmenuje po jejich velmistrovi který ubránil ostrov od Ottomanské invaze. Řád tu vládl přes dvěstě let až do pořážky Napoleonem.
The architecture is a topic on its own with some of the oldest free-standing structures on Earth and 365 churches (one church for each day, hehe). I fell in love with the narrow streets, stone structures and just the general way the island is build.
Architektura je téma samo o sobě. Nějaké stavby jsou nejstrarší stojící stavby na světě a mají tu 365 kostelů (na každý den v roce, haha). Zamilovala jsem se do těch úzkých uliček, kamenných staveb a všeobecně do toho jak ostrov vypadá.
The not-so-favourite fact about Malta for me was the traffic. There are apparently more than 400.000 car registered on the island, where the population is just over half a million!
Jediné co se mi až tak na Maltě nelíbilo byla doprava. Na půl milionu obyvatel je na ostrově zaregistrováno na 400.000 aut!
I was leaving Malta feeling like the one week I spent there was far from enough to fully explore this tiny but full of places to see and experience island.
Odjížděla jsem z Malty s pocitem že ten týden co jsem tam strávila ani zdaleka nebyl dost na to celý ostrov prozkoumat.
But the best experience I had there when visiting this time? Laser tag in an old prison! It was a team-building event organized by my sister’s work and they kindly invited me too. So much fun!
Ale ta nejlepší zkušenost kterou jsem na ostrově měla byl laser tag. Organizovaná akce prací mojí sestry a laskavě mě také pozvali. Byla to super sranda a hráli jsem ve starém vězení!
And fun fact to finish with – they build a small houses for street cats and refill their food and water! ♥☺
Vtipná poznámka na konec - vyrábějí tu malé domečky pro kočky z ulice a plní jim misky vodou a žrádlem! ☺♥

No, může být i "hůř", my například žili na Gozu :D Vy jste se tam teda podle fotek nevypravili, což je škoda, protože Gozo je fakt nádherné, oproti hlavnímu ostrovu hodně zelené :) Ale jsem rád, že se ti na Maltě líbilo :)
Btw ty v Uruguayi, segra na Maltě, to musí mít vaši radost :D

Na Gozu jsme bohužel nevyrazily. Nebyl čas a byla zima. Ale určitě se na Maltu ještě za ségrou vrátím někdy v létě a Gozo dáme. :)
A jinak jo, naši z nás zrovna radost nemají :D :D

Malta podle mého není tak skrytá, minimálně před anglicky mluvícím světem. Z Británie sem létá minimálně půl tuctu přímých linek z různých měst a polovina Britů si tu plánuje na důchod pořídit letní byt. Ta druhá polovina už to asi udělala :))
Pokud polovina Britů tráví důchod na Maltě, tak ta druhá na Kanárech :D ;)
Good point. A někteří na Baleárách. Ale nedivil bych se, kdyby měli víc než jeden byt na důchod ;)
Já mám nějakou smůlu na ty downvoty poslední dobu! se z toho po***u. sorry. nevím kam mi ta ruka líta, hlavně by se to normálně mělo zrušit když na downvotu kliknu znova, ale nejde to. chjo. pardón!!!

jednou je to chyba co se může stát každému, podruhé je to chyba co se stane už jen blbci :D
Já tě jen tak škádlím, víme, že to neděláš schválně a ani nemáš moc Hive Power, takže to opravdu "nebolí" :D ;)
Jinak je pravda že s Brexitem lítá mnohem víc lidí na Maltu už jen proto že je to teď jediná země v EU kde se mluví anglicky. A Britové toho využívají asi ze stejného důvodu.
