A visit to the Jovanja monastery in western Serbia

in Worldmappin3 days ago

Hello everyone. In the previous post, I began to describe my journey to Tara mountain. After a short break in Valjevo town, we headed to Tara. After a few kilometers we saw a sign directing us to the Jovanja monastery. We had never been to this monastery before so we headed there.

I like to visit monasteries as historical landmarks of great importance and I am fascinated by their duration over centuries and the strange but nice feeling of well-being when I am there. I also find it fascinating that monasteries are always located somewhere far away at the end of the road where it is impossible to go any further. Like at the end of the world. It was the same on the way to the Jovanja monastery. We reached the end of the road and saw the monastery quarters.

It was open so we went inside.

At the entrance it was written: God bless the one who enters this temple, protect and preserve the one who leaves it and give peace to the one who stays in it.

The yard was spacious. Now it is winter and it is very cold. When the days are warmer and everything is green and blooming, it is certainly much more beautiful here and it is worth coming then because the nature around is stunning.

I liked the art work on the wall which just shows the beauty of the greenery of this place.

The monastery church dates from the 15th century, although this information is not entirely reliable. What is certain is that it was demolished and rebuilt several times. The biggest destruction happened at the end of the 18th century by the Turks.

At that time, there was a theological school in the monastery and the monastery is dedicated to Saint John.

We also entered the church.

The atmosphere inside was very intimate and quiet.

We stayed inside for a bit and headed further towards Tara mountain where my children couldn't wait to finally dive into the snow. 😊
