If you are in the town of Montalbán (Venezuela) it is easy to live a mountain hiking experience without having to make a long journey or extreme effort. Just leave from the Central Plaza of the town towards the west following Bolivar Street and once you leave the asphalt street behind you will be on the dirt road that leads to the hills. There the first observation point you will find will be “EL Cojobal”, a stretch of the road named this way due to a certain type of deciduous trees that grow on both sides of the road even forming small forests which offer an interesting view during the dry season thanks to the lattice of bare branches and foliage in the process of withering ... This is a place where you can come and walk a couple of kilometers to exercise, take pictures, breathe fresh air and observe nature without having to go too far from the urban center of Montalbán... I invite you to continue with this publication and appreciate how “EL Cojobal” looks like in the middle of the dry season...
Si tú estás en el pueblo de Montalbán (Venezuela) es fácil vivir una experiencia de excursión en montaña sin tener que hacer un largo recorrido ni un esfuerzo extremo. Basta salir desde la Plaza Central del pueblo hacia el oeste siguiendo la Calle Bolívar y una ves dejar atrás el asfaltado ya estarás en el camino de tierra que lleva hacia las colinas. Allí el primer punto de observación que podrán encontrar será "EL Cojobal", un tramo del camino llamado así gracias a cierto tipo de árboles caducifolios que crecen a ambos lados del camino llegando incluso a formar pequeños bosques los cuales ofrecen una interesante vista durante la época de sequía gracias al entramado de ramas desnudas y follaje en proceso de marchitarse... Este es un lugar a el cual se puede venir y caminar par de kilómetros para ejercitarnos, hacer fotografías, respirar aire puro y observar la naturaleza sin tener que alejarnos demasiado del casco urbano de Montalbán... Les invito a continuar adelante en esta publicación y apreciar como es "EL Cojobal" en plena temporada seca...

Despite the relatively high temperature typical of this time of the year, the nature in this place still has a lot to show. In addition, there are small peasant settlements in the area and these offer a very interesting view of how rural life is still present in this region... The proximity to the village allows the road to be used by quite a few people either for commuting to places where they live in the mountains or for hiking and motorcycle rides. Also, in a couple of days we will be on carnival break and there are already people vacationing in Montalbán, some of them like to come and spend some time in the hills adjacent to the town... The important thing here is to come with fresh clothes and comfortable shoes, as well as adequate hydration. It is also advisable to return to the village or take shelter in a suitable place during the hottest hours, especially at midday, when temperatures can reach 35°C (95°F).
A pesar de la relativamente alta temperatura propia de esta época del año, la naturaleza en este lugar sigue teniendo mucho para mostrar. Además, hay pequeños asentamientos campesinos en el lugar y estos ofrecen una visión muy interesante de como la vida rural sigue presente en esta región... La cercanía con el pueblo permite que el camino sea utilizado por bastantes personas ya sea para trasladarse a lugares en donde viven en las montañas o para hacer caminatas y paseos en motocicleta. Además, en un par de días estaremos en asueto de carnaval y ya hay personas vacacionando en Montalbán, algunas de ellas gustan de venir y pasar un rato en las colinas adyacentes al pueblo... Lo importante aquí es venir con ropa fresca y cazado cómodo, además de una adecuada hidratación. También es recomendable retornar al pueblo o guarecerse en algún lugar adecuado durante las horas de mayor calor, especialmente al mediodía, momento en el cual se puede experimentar temperaturas de hasta 35°C.

These are photographs which I can only take during the dry season, because with the arrival of the rains the trees will quickly recover their foliage and all this “dramatic effect” of the ochre colors, the bare branches and the blue sky will change drastically. Despite the harshness of the drought, nature remains defiant... Looking around there is a universe of wonderful things happening and I love coming here to record this with my camera as often as I can.
Estas son fotografías las cuales solo puedo hacer durante la estación de sequía, pues con la llegada de las lluvias los árboles recuperarán rápidamente el follaje y todo este "efecto dramático" de los colores ocres, las ramas desnudas y el cielo azul cambiará drásticamente. A pesar de la dureza de la sequía, la naturaleza permanece desafiante... Mirando alrededor hay un universo de cosas maravillosas sucediendo y amo venir aquí para registrar esto con mi cámara tantas veces como puedo.

The “guacharacas” are birds larger than the average chicken and their shrill song can be heard more than a kilometer away when males sing to attract the attention of females or to tell rival males: “This territory is mine, my friend! They are curious, noisy and abundant birds. For a time their populations were drastically reduced, but in recent years they have been seen again in numbers like those of yesteryear.... I love to see “guacharacas” because they look like they are “thinking” ;)
Las "guacharacas" son aves más grandes que un pollo de corral promedio y su canto estridente puede escucharse a más de un kilómetro de distancia cuando los machos cantan para llamar la atención de las hembras o para decirle a los machos rivales: "¡Este territorio es mío amigo!"... Son aves curiosas, ruidosas y abundantes. Durante un tiempo sus poblaciones se redujeron drásticamente, pero en años recientes se han vuelto a ver en cantidades como las de antaño... A mi me encanta ver "guacharacas" porque tienen aspecto de "estar pensando" ;)

The main road is good for observing nature without too many complications. But there are also some shortcuts that go through parts of the forest and there you can observe nearby charming details such as insects, birds and some wild fruits that add a note of color to the complex chromatic scheme of the dry season...
EL camino principal es bueno para observar la naturaleza sin demasiadas complicaciones. Pero también hay algunos atajos que atraviesan partes del bosque y allí se pueden observar detalles cercanos encantadores como insectos, aves y algunos frutos silvestres que agregan una nota de color al complejo esquema cromático de la época de sequía...

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.
