If you take the narrow and usually lonely road from Montalbán south to meet the Pan-American Highway, you will find a long straight road of about five kilometres in length, full of rural spaces on both sides. This route is a wonderful way to enjoy the bucolic atmosphere, breathe in the fresh air and take lots of pictures typical of our rural surroundings. You'll find cows, horses, landscapes, birds, scattered hills, blue skies, pastures and secondary roads which lead to even more attractive and delightful nooks and crannies to explore. However, there is one place that can be overlooked if you don't know where it is. I am talking about a small hamlet called "Las Matas" which, being so small and sparsely populated, was perhaps one of the settlements most affected by the exodus of people suffered in recent years throughout this region of Central-Northern Venezuela...
Si usted sale por la angosta y por lo general solitaria carretera que va desde Montalbán hacia el sur hasta encontrarse con la carretera Pan-Americama, se encontrará con una larga recta de unos cinco kilómetros de longitud repleta de espacios rurales a lado y lado. Este trayecto es maravilloso para disfrutar del ambiente bucólico, respirar aire puro y hacer un montón de fotografías típicas de nuestros entornos rurales. Encontrarás vacas, caballos, paisajes, aves, colinas dispersas, cielos azules, pastizales y caminos secundarios los cuales llevan a rincones aún más atractivos y deliciosos para explorar. Sin embargo, hay un lugar el cual se puede pasar de largo si uno desconoce su ubicación. Hablo de un pequeño caserío llamado "Las Matas" el cual, por ser tan pequeño y poco poblado, fue quizás uno de los asentamientos más afectado por el éxodo de pobladores sufrido en años recientes por toda esta región del Centro-Norte de Venezuela...

The small chapel is perhaps the closest thing to a place that could be called ‘the centre of the hamlet’ but this place is nowadays just a handful of streets with houses scattered in an anarchic way, many of them abandoned and also dilapidated. Loneliness seems to be a constant in ‘Las Matas’ even in the mornings. I presume that the few people who still live here are absent from their homes, probably working in the nearby fields. All this makes these streets a space where ‘Photographing the Silence’ is easy... La pequeña capilla es quizás lo más parecido a un lugar que pueda llamarse "el centro del caserío" pero este lugar hoy por hoy es apenas un puñado de calles con casa esparcidas de manera anárquica, muchas de ellas abandonas y también deterioradas. La soledad parece ser una constante en "Las Matas" incluso durante las mañanas. Presumo que las pocas personas que siguen viviendo aquí, están ausentes de sus casas seguramente laborando en los campos cercanos. Toto esto convierte estas calles en un espacio en donde es fácil "Fotografiar el Silencio"... Pero les invito a continuar adelante en esta publicación y ver fotos de como son los paisajes en el trayecto recorrido hasta el caserío y más...

I did this route leaving the village at about 9:00 AM and covered the route, which is almost entirely flat, in little more than an hour, as I stopped constantly to observe the landscapes in the farms and obviously to take pictures. The road is ideal for cycling, the state of the pavement is good and the little traffic of vehicles makes this a really relaxing ride...
Hice este recorrido saliendo del pueblo ceca de las 9:00 AM y recorrí el trayecto, el cual es prácticamente en su totalidad plano, en poco más de una hora, pues me detuve constantemente para observar los paisajes en las fincas y obviamente para hacer fotografías. La carretera es ideal para hacer recorridos en bicicleta, el estado del pavimento es bueno y el poco transito de vehículos hacen que este sea un paseo realmente relajante...

The entrance to the hamlet of ‘Las Matas’ is just a narrow paved street next to the old liquor store (and grocery store) of Mr. Pinto... If one ignores that this narrow street is the entrance to the hamlet, one might think that it is just another entrance to some agricultural property. By the way, Mr. Pinto's old liquor store is no longer in operation, but in the 90s of the last century, when this region of the valley was bustling with productive farms and workers everywhere, it was a popular place for those who needed to stock up on groceries and/or gorge themselves on beer and other beverages. As a twenty-something myself, I used to come here to drink beer with my friends and listen to Mexican songs (Mr. Pinto's favourites) on his old phonograph with little 45 rpm acetate discs... A lot has changed here in 35 years, now what abounds is silence and a lot of memories.
La entrada al caserío "Las Matas" es apenas una estrecha calle pavimentada justo aledaña a la antigua Licorería (y abasto) del Sr. Pinto... Si uno ignora que esta callejuela es la entrada al caserío, se podría pensar que es una entrada más a alguna propiedad de uso agrícola. Por cierto, esa viaja Licorería del Sr. Pinto ya no funciona, pero en los años 90 del siglo pasado, cuando esta región del valle bullía de fincas productivas y trabajadores a por doquier, era un sitio muy frecuentado por quienes necesitaban proveerse de víveres y/o también atiborrarse de cerveza y otras bebidas espirituosas. Yo mismo, siendo un veinteañero, solía venir aquí a beber cerveza con mis amigos y escuchar canciones mexicanas (las favoritas del Sr. Pinto) en su vieja rockola con pequeños discos de acetato de 45 rpm... Muchas cosas han cambiado aquí en 35 años, ahora lo que abunda es el silencio y un montón de recuerdos.

The stroll through the quiet streets of the hamlet was for me like a sort of a journey back in time. Everything here seems to be in the same place although more faded and some things more deteriorated. But the truth is that I couldn't even find a new house which I hadn't seen in my youth... The only thing that could break the almost fictional silence was the sound of a rather new song that seemed to come from a radio located inside the small medical dispensary whose paint, like that of the small chapel, seemed to be a bit newer than the rest of the buildings...
El recorrido por las silenciosas calles del caserío fue para mi como una especie vuelta atrás en el tiempo. Todo aquí parece estar en el mismo lugar aunque más descolorido y algunas cosas más deterioradas. Pero lo cierto es que no pude encontrar siquiera una nueva casa la cual yo no hubiese visto en mis años de juventud... Lo único que que pudo quebrantar el silencio casi de ficción, fue el sonido de una canción bastante nueva que parecía venir de una radio ubicada dentro del pequeño dispensario médico cuya pintura, al igual que la de la pequeña capilla, parecía ser un poco más nueva que la del resto de las edificaciones...

I wandered around the narrow streets for a little over half an hour... I was riding my old bicycle and the whole hamlet seemed to be conspiring to make me take pictures and captivate me because of the solitude of the place... The last house I photographed was a very old one, the oldest in this hamlet and which belonged to the first landowners who moved here in the 40s of the last century, when the land was assigned to private individuals by the municipal government. In that small house, now in ruins, they also used to sell liquor and tobacco several decades ago (photo 23)... After this I decided to return to the village along the long straight road.
Seguí deambulando por las angostas calles durante poco más de media hora... Iba montado sobre mi vieja bicicleta y el caserío entero parecía estar conspirando para que yo hiciese fotos y me cautivase debido a la soledad del lugar... La ultima casa que fotografié fue una muy vieja, la más vieja de este caserío y la cual perteneció a los primeros dueños de tierras que se mudaron aquí en los años 40 del siglo pasado, cuando los terrenos fueron asignados a particulares por el gobierno municipal. En esa pequeña casa hoy en ruinas, también solían vender licor y tabaco hace varias décadas atrás (foto 23)... Después de esto decidí retornar al pueblo por la larga carretera recta.

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.
NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografías capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape 3.6.3.

Podría esas fotos uno tomarlo de una forma negativa porque se ve la precariedad de vivir en esa localidad. Sin embargo, trato de verlo hacia un lado positivo y encontrar la forma de ver la belleza en esas fotos, la soledad de las calles, y la calidad de tu fotografía. Excelente

Me alegro mucho que hayas hecho esta presentación. Muchos pensamos siempre en dar a conocer lo bello pero no lo real.
Es un lugar impresionante aunque imagino no muy bueno para los que allí viven.
Bueno, la gente esos caseríos solitarios parece estar adaptada al ritmo lento y al silencio... Pero ciertamente, muchos se van en busca de mejores horizontes :(
