Public spaces are always well received by people. A park as a place to relax, enjoy the tranquillity and be surrounded by a pleasant atmosphere is always a pleasant experience. There are many such parks in Cuba, but one of the most attractive, visited and frequented is undoubtedly the Parque de la Fraternidad Americana, located in the heart of Old Havana.

This park is a convergence point of some of the main avenues of the city such as Monte, Prado and Dragones streets. Around it are buildings that stand out for their historical and cultural importance, such as the emblematic National Capitol, whose magnificent gold-plated dome is visible from the park, the Saratoga Hotel, the Indian Fountain and the nearby entrance to Chinatown.

Fraternity Park is located in what was once an empty space used for military manoeuvres, until it was decided to transform the site into a park that would represent and symbolise unity among the countries of Latin America. For this reason a large ceiba tree was planted in the centre of the park, a tree chosen to represent friendship between peoples. This tree has a strong link with our culture and traditions and is one of the most emblematic of Cuban flora. It is surrounded by an eye-catching and peculiar bronze fence in a circular shape, which further enhances its presence.

The inauguration of the park must have been a very exciting and symbolic event, as it was attended by representatives from several Latin American countries. Each one brought a portion of soil from their respective country, which was used to fertilise the large ceiba tree, thus strengthening the symbolism of unity.

In this large green space, among lampposts, benches and abundant vegetation, there are several busts that pay homage to historical figures of the American continent, which also makes it a place of respect for history.
