A trip to the Racha (რაჭა) region, Georgia
Up up up the mountain we go, from the Katitsvera (კატიწვერა) pass to the Udziro (უძირო) lake!
Good morning good evening good afternoon, travelers! Time is irrelevant, as we are here to talk about space, spaces we visit and spaces we become a part of!
Last week, I had the privilege to go on a 3 days hike, in some of the most beautiful mountains of Georgia, in the the Racha region. The hike is considered easy to moderate, but let's face it, a hike with a 2000m ascension in a day is not an easy hike. My calves and my shoulders can attest to that.
We spent the first night in a guesthouse in Shovi (შოვი), just down the beginning of the hike, and left at first lights the next day. The way up, filled with random events and adventures, took us a bit more than 10 hours, and the way down about 7 hours.
On the way up, between some sick hikers, some gigantic murderous spider (sorry Dominic), an insane flower allergy, and multiple sunburns, we managed to take a bunch of pictures of the process.
yes this was the way up
But as we reached the top of the pass, Lekso carrying two backpacks at once, and Dominic even carrying another hiker on his back for a while, we felt a wave of satisfaction surging in us! We had done it, for better or worse!
And that's when we saw our campsite, the Udziro lake, marvelous and turquoise on top of its mountain! What a sight and what a place to camp at! The first thing some of us did was to jump straight in. Well, 10 degrees is a maximum temperature the lake could have been at, so I did not spend even a full minute in it!
This was basically the prime spot to look at the Perseid meteor shower that night, and we were not disappointed! All size of meteors were blazing through the night sky, at irregular intervals, the show was indeed unique!
The next day, we took off camp and headed down, but not without taking some last minute pictures with the group.
