On my recent outing to one of the most prestigious blue flag tourist beaches on the entire south coast of Africa, I came across a unique invention and its inventor, which I want to share with you today. This is on a beach called Robberg beach in the idyllic tourist hotspot called Plettenberg Bay in the “Garden Route” region of South Africa. And it’s something that greatly facilitates anyone’s visit to the beach on any day.

I was walking along the shoreline of the warm Indian Ocean and saw a new item which had popped up in recent months on more than one beach along this stretch of the coast. It’s a stack of lockers for hire with a built-in mobile phone recharge terminal in each locker.

I had seen them before but on this day I happened to notice a man hard at work beside the lockers, so I went up and found out that he is the inventor and that it’s a “proudly South African” invention, as he calls it. So I took the opportunity to interview him on video briefly and you can watch the clip here to find out the details.

This is such a practical and useful item, where anyone can book a little locker for the day at a nominal cost of ZAR35, which is just over $2. This frees you up to explore the beach, swim or walk about at your leisure, while your items are secured in the locker.

The most fascinating part of the invention is that it has a built-in socket for recharging your mobile phone in each locker. How cool is that? The inventor – a smart local business entrepreneur – designed these lockers and had them constructed here in South Africa and has put up several at the top tourist beaches in this region, where international and local travelers come spend their holidays.

Check out the video clip to find out more about the “Liberty Lockers” as they’re called and listen to this smart and savvy inventor describe his design and the service it provides. One thing I forgot to ask him was how the charging station is actually powered. That is still a mystery to me, though I guess it may be via solar panels for example. Or it could be a battery situated inside that provides power for the charging sockets. Let me find out more about that for you.

I am always happy to invite travelers from all over the globe to come and enjoy this idyllic nature seaside paradise here in Plettenberg Bay, possibly the most beautiful stretch of coastline in the entire Southern Africa. Now with these “Liberty Lockers” we can all feel safer and secured as well as charged up while exploring the shoreline or swimming in the warm Indian Ocean at our leisure.

This is one more step in making these Blue Flag beaches even more tourist friendly and attractive for visitors from all over the world. So please feel inspired to add Plettenberg Bay to your travel itinerary and let me know when you’re in the area. I will be happy to show you around so that you can discover all the best local natural gems. You will be very impressed.

That's a funny and a really good idea - lockers with a socket for charging. You don't have to be afraid that something will be stolen or the battery will run out:)

Haha yes it looks like a clever concept. Let's see if it gains mass adoption.
